SMTP port configuration

The manual for NIS 2012 says: "Norton Internet Security supports all email programs that use non-SSL POP3 and SMTP
communication protocols .... Norton Internet Security lets you manually configure your POP3 and SMTP email ports for email protection."  This is clearly not true since I cannot configure port 587 for SMTP communication; I get a message saying that this port is not supported for email communications. Many ISP's require the use of this port for SMTP and the manual says I can manually configure SMTP email ports.  Searching the forms shows that this has been an ongoing issue for years and a fix was supposed to be in place already.  Why hasn't it been fixed and why does the manual imply that it has?

Hi Petech,

Traffic through Port 587 is SSL-encrypted, which is why Norton is unable to monitor it.  That is why you are unable to add 587 to the list of protected ports.

Hi Petech:

Welcome to the Norton Community!

What you are stating has to do with NIS 2012 Email Scanning and AntiSpam. SMTP SSL Encrypted email ports will not work with them.

I have actually submitted a post to request that the online Support Pages be updated to reflect this and a Product Suggestion to have these SSL ports enabled. However, the scanning change is not an easy task, to say the least, since the Ports are encrypted for good reason.

I will resubmit my request again, ASAP, that these Support web pages here and here be revised to reflect the SSL Port information.

Just to recap, you can use these ports for email without issue, except that the above features will not work with them right now.

In any case your email security will be just fine, since Auto-Protect will kick-in if there is any detection of malware.

Hope that this answers your questions. :smileyhappy:

Hi Petech:

I have just received confirmation from Symantec that the Support Webpages and related Manuals

will be updated to reflect these changes in the upcoming release of NIS 2013.

Just a heads-up. :smileyvery-happy:

Cheers!
