The above thread has been going for some time now, and some of the stuff posted has been factually incorrect, however some good points have been made. I just wondered what you guys thoughts were on free anti virus as opposed to paid for. I personally probably would not opt for Comodo as a free anti virus product as I think Microsoft Security Essential would be a better choice, but that's just my opinion. I am starting to wonder though, just what Symantec can offer me in anti virus protection that the likes of Microsoft and Comodo can't.
someone posted this:
Just bought a new notebook from Bestbuy the other day (specs shown in my sig) and HP was kind enough to bundle a nice little flyer from Symantec, it said:
"Free security software won't cost you an arm and a leg. Just maybe your identity".
With a message like that of course it will scare unknowing buyers into purchasing their terrible security software, they are certainly doing an excellent job at marketing FUD. I wonder if maybe in the future we can see some PC vendors bundling the freeware version of Comodo internet security on new pcs...
Here was forum admin Melih's reply, I think he's got it in for he's got it in for Symantec.
This is border line illegal. Especially after the AV test confirmed that Comodo (free product) protected better than Symantec! This is misleading the consumers. I hope HP will do something about it. Obviously even after they were proven not to protect as well as a free security product (Comodo), Symantec continues their systematic misleading marketing!
Shame on you Symantec!

Comodo also has a paid version (why?). It did not perform well against Norton and other products in this AV test conducted for PC World:

The product review is worth reading:

As always, Melih is more provocative than enlightening.
I don't have a lot of faith in what I am reading. The report on TrendMicro Titanium amazes me. I have it on my work machine because the Windows firewall, which it uses, is so abysmal, the boss can get easy access to my machine, as can anybody else for that matter. It is entirely cloud-based and almost nothing is on the machine. In spite of that the scans use up so much of the resources that I am locked out of the machine for and hour. The scans don't even run regularly. It's dreadful, thanks!

I also have a problem with the Comodo write-up. The installation is a snap. I have no idead why they found it so difficult. Also, since it got all 25 malware samples, I fail to see how it could lack a "solid level of core security."

I haven't used any of the others, but I have to wonder about some of the comments. Certain forms of advertising, I don't approve of and we are seeing too much of it. This paid vs unpaid is a waste of time and talent.
