So what is it, when NIS is installed, is windows firewall suppose to be disabled or not?

I have NIS and recently noticed that windows firewall is still turned on, can some please clarify this, is windows firewall suppose to be off or on once NIS is installed?

Hi davidwbenham

If you have windows 7 or above then Norton will manage the windows security automatically if its windows vista or below then check to see if you need to manually disable windows defender and windows firewall after installing Norton.

In windows 7 or above the windows firewall will show as on, this is correct and should be left this way.

I'm on win7 and my windows firewall shows as off and my NIS firewall shows as on.

The Windows firewall service should still be running even after NIS is installed.

That's new to me, aren't two running firewalls conflicting? (even windows itself warns me for that)

The Windows Firewall feature uses the Windows Firewall Service, as does Norton Firewall. This is just the way Windows programming works.

The two are separate parts, the program and the service. The program needs to be disabled, but  the service is still required by any firewall program to operate.

Thanks for clarifying peterweb, the windows firewall service is running here.

Only there's one thing that seems a bit strange here cause in my advanced windows firewall settings the windows firewall is turned on (in all profiles) and in my normal configuration screen windows firewall shows as off and NIS firewall as on

(while a member here on the forum pm'd me that in his advanced windows firewall settings the windows firewall is turned off).

(I checked the advanced windows firewall settings from within a user account giving the admin password in UAC btw)

Hi mark_234,

I sent you a PM, please read it and let me know if it solves your situation.  If it does I will post that info for all to be aware of.

What you are seeing is normal and correct.  The following article provides an explanation (although it discusses the SEP firewall, the information applies to any third-party firewall, including Norton):

Advanced Settings for Windows 7 Firewall indicate that it is on, even when Symantec Endpoint Protection Network Threat Protection (NTP) is installed.

Hi SendOfJive, thank you for your reply (and the link)!

If I may add one more thing - the Windows Firewall Properties link shown in the image in SOJ's link wil take you to an area where your can change the setting to Off:

On the part on the left where Domain is circled you will notice it is now off.  What I did was select Windows Firewall Properties (circled at bottom of left hand image).

I then had the Properties block show up (right hand side of image.  I selected Domain Profile and using the drop down changed the setting from On (recommended) to OFF and then APPLY.  This changed the Domain Profile from Windows Firewall On to OFF as shown.  Doing it for each of the Profiles (Private and Public) will do the same for them.

For more information on these settings, please see the circled Learn more about these settings towards the bottom of the left hand image.  I don't know if any of the info contained in the addtional information pertains to your system or not - but it appears pretty clear to me that in my setup, changing those settings have no impact on my system's operation.

Perhaps SOJ can add something in regards to changing the properties??
