I don't understand your reply. I don't see anything about chatting?
I also have trouble with social sites. My daughter has joined several including Facebook and her social activity has never shown anything. Even when she registered for Facebook nothing showed up on her account. It certainly doesn't look to me that anything is being monitored.
And I am not talking about chatting here.
KatieQ...Please clarify since I've been getting the following: XXXX was blocked from visiting website http://www.myspace.com/ because it contains content associated with: "Discussion & Social Networking".
I have since found out that even though I've been getting the above messages, my daughter at times has still been able to get into MySpace. I posted this info in a thread last week. I just looked for it to see if there were any replies and can't seem to find the thread.
The main reason why I loaded OFN was to keep my daughter off the Social Networking sites. Based on your comment and what I'm now experienceing, it looks like I need to find some other security software. I'm glad I'm not pay extra for OFN.
Hi Bagger,
You said "since found out that even though I've been getting the above messages, my daughter at times has still been able to get into MySpace". Please tell us what you see that make you believe you daughter is still able to access myspace.com? Do you see it in person that she is able to visit MySpace.com or something else?
Please make sure you have Discussion & Social Networking item checked to be blocked under Settings -> Web
When you receive the notification emails, she should see this:
Katie,
Discussion & Social Networking item has always been checked since day one. Keeping our daughter off Discussion & Social Networking sites was the main reason we uploaded OFN.
She began receiving phone calls from a new person. When we asked how she got to know him she told us My Space. We logged onto MySpace from our profile. It was very apparent that she has successfully been on these individual pages before. She was very familiar with the info he had on his page. I talked to her school and none of her current classes involve computers with internet access. She's been on restriction and does not spend anytime at friends homes.
She told me that In mid March she was on Playlist.com listening to a band. Apparently there was a link that took you to the bands MySpace page. To her surprise It worked when she clicked on it. Since then she told me that she has occassionally been able to get on MySpace by typing the MySpace URL. Though she said that most of the time she gets the screen you posted,
I'm 100% certain she does know the password and is not disabling OFN. Been saving the alerts I'm getting. Will have to see how often I've seen My Space alerts.
Hi Bagger,
Thanks for the additional information. We will check to see if we can access MySpace.com via Playlist.com. In the meantime, can you please put MySpace.com to the black list to see if it helps.
By the way, I assume when you said "I'm 100% certain she does know the password", you meant to say she doesn't know the password.
Thanks,
Katie
Yes....I meant to say that I'm 100% sure she "doesn't " know the password.
I'll add MySpace to the blacklist.
Hi Bagger,
Thanks for the update. We have been trying to access MySpace.com via Playlist.com while Discussion & Social Networking is blocked, but had no luck so far. If you have any details on how to reproduce it, please let us know.
Thanks,
Katie
She'll be getting back on the computer this weekend. I'll spend some time with her to try and duplicate the event.
Thanks! It would be very interesting to see how she gets around the system.
Thanks,
Katie
Katie,
I am also having trouble with the monitoring of social sites. When I try to setup monitoring of my child's facebook account, NSM (Norton Safety Minder) tells me:
"Social Network Settings for xxxxx
xxxxxx has no known Social Network Accounts"
Norton SM is not aware of my child's facebook account, and I don't know how to tell it that it's wrong. Whether I use Firefox or Internet Explorer to access the Safety Minder setup page (from my child's computer) NSM does not see the facebook account, even though the Activity page of NSM sees that the kid has logged on to Facebook.
I am using Windows XP (32-bit)
Firefox 3.6.3
Internet Explorer 7.0.5730.11
Norton OFS 1.2.2.2
How do I get Norton Safety Minder to see the Facebook account?
Thanks.
Hi ftrobaugh,
Please log on the PC as your child and delete all the temporary saved sessions and clear the cache (Go to the browser IE or Firefox/Tools/Internet Options/ Delete Cookies..Temporary Internet files). You should be able to the kid with Facebook account when the kid logs onto facebook later.
Please let us know if it helps.
Thanks,
Katie
That did it. Thanks for your help, but I should have been able to get the info from the help button at the top of the page "https://onlinefamily.norton.com/familysafety/activityList.fs" That online help is pretty skimpy.
Ted
I recently installed Online Family from Norton and although I think it does a good job, I'm having the same issue many on here are having. When my child accesses Facebook it does not register under Activity--> Social. Even though I know my child my child accesses facebook because it's listed under Activity--> Web.
I'd like to know why under the Social tab is will state "No Activity". I've read in other postings that OnlineFamily detects some social sites automatically, and Faceable is on the the listed sites. Can someone please tell me then why it won't show under the Social Activity?
I have double checked and I have the Social Network Supervision turned on, but it will not detect any Social activity.
Hi smille,
Have you got a chance to try the following steps?
Please log on the PC as your child and delete all the temporary saved sessions and clear the cache (Go to the browser IE or Firefox/Tools/Internet Options/ Delete Cookies..Temporary Internet files). You should be able to the kid with Facebook account when the kid logs onto facebook later.
Thanks,
Katie
