Some files not being backed up

Greetings,

I have a lot of files that are not being backed up. The icon overlay shows a blue "unprotected" icon, and no matter how many times I run backup, these files are not being backed up. There are no Backup errors in Security History.

How can I find out why some files are not being backed up? I'm not sure where to start.

I have Norton 360 Platinum Plus I 22.22.11.12.

Thanks,
Shane.

The size of the data package I thought I was backing up was 4.7G, but the backup set is only 3.5M.  This happened sometime in the last year, because I have an old set from a year ago that's 4.3G.  I'm using a flash drive for now, but I 've spent some time messing with this - looking at the file extensions especially - and I think the problem is there.  At least I found the issue before I needed the data, but it's a shame that this is not working.

So, just jumping into this thread because it is current and very relevant to my immediate interests:

Am I to understand that Norton Cloud Backup only backs up certain file extensions, even if you try (and thought you had succeeded) in designating an entire Users folder as to be backed up?  Because that's what just happened to me, and my old hard drive is I believe completely dead, and I was hoping that Norton had successfully backed up my entire user profile just the previous night--but it didn't.  In particular, all of my browser bookmarks are gone even after reinstalling Chrome (and I have not been regularly exporting to an html or other file because I thought my whole profile was being backed up).  I don't even know how many other critical files may have been omitted.  Is that likely the case?

Is it possible to report a bug to Norton?

There are hundreds of file types on my computer. The built-in Norton backup sets selects a few, but not all. The file extensions that need to be backed up are constantly changing. Trying to monitor this would take a lot of time. I have turned the built-in backup sets to Off.

I have one user-created backup set. I have added folders (like Documents) to be backed up.

One of the reasons I use Backup Status Overlays is it helps me see files I've used recently. If a folder has lots of files, a file that has been modified since the last backup will have blue arrows. As @peterweb explained, running backup should turn these overlays to green checkmarks. But these modified files are not being backed up.

Is it possible to report a bug to Norton?

Shane:

%userProfile% is an environment variable. This is how Windows (not Norton) works "under the hood". For example, if you open File Explorer and type %userProfile% in the address bar, it will open the User Profile folder. For me, this folder is "C:\Users\Shane".

The reason I didn't specify "C:\Users\Shane" in my original post is because this folder is unique to me. The %userProfile% environment variable, however, works for everyone.

In the second tab ("What") of the Backup Settings, you can select the file types that you want to backup. However, this means that most file types don't get backed up. As you've mentioned, .bat and .cmd are not part of the Office Documents file set.

  1. I have set all of the File Types to Off
  2. I added the necessary folders (Documents, Pictures, etc.).

I only have one backup set.

Everything was working in the beginning. I only discovered the problem recently, but I don't know how long these files haven't been backed up.

head scratch.

I'm aware your path = C:\Users\user

Shane:
1. I have set all of the File Types to Off

Why Off?
as far as I'm aware = You must select at least one file type or add at least one file to the backup set.

as far as I'm aware = I don't have .bat or .cmd files.  I imagine you'd add them to Other File Types On > Configure

One user created backup set?
Meaning, you've deleted Norton's default backup set?

I run Norton Backup.  On occasion, I've restored from Norton Backup.
Sorry, I've never verified Norton backups.
Sorry, I don't use Norton overlays.

I thought @peterweb comment [here] was why you see Unprotected.

_____________
Edit:
just noticed with my user created backup sets = File Types are all Off.
Maybe, with my created backup sets - my added Folders satisfies File Types.

Oh okay...blue icon means the file has been modified after it has been backed up.
Who knew?  @peterweb knew!

  • Backup Status Overlay: Inserts an icon on files.
Protected - Green icon next to the file indicates that the file has been backed up
Unprotected - Blue icon next to the file indicates that the file has been modified after it has been backed up
Excluded - Gray icon next to the file indicates that the files has been excluded from its backup set

If your files have a blue icon, it means they are in the queue to be backed up next time backup runs. If you are changing these files often, you might often see the blue icon again until backup runs.

Shane:

One of the paths is:

%userProfile%\Documents\development\batch\

The folder contains .bat, .cmd, and .txt files. For each file type, about half show a green (protected) overlay, and the other half are blue (unprotected). I can't find any difference between between files that backed up and files that are not being backed up. There are no files with a missing overlay, so Norton knows it should be backing up these files, but it isn't for some reason.

Hmm, head scratch.  I'm far from knowing how Norton works under the hood.
Well, I don't use overlays...so, no comment - protected v unprotected.  Are you only running default backup settings?
Meaning, have you created additional backup sets pointing to "The folder"...as test?
Meaning, have you created additional backup sets pointing to "unprotected"...as test?
Maybe, you've found an unknown bug.
Sorry, I run Norton default set and two user created backup sets.
I've never drilled down to see if my backup settings were being followed.

If you've created "tests" including those files, those file types & pointing to those unprotected files and they're not backed up.
~ head scratch IDK

~ under Office Documents - I do not find .bat nor .cmd
Since, some your .bat and .cmd files report protected.  I guess your .bat and .cmd files are backed up.
Are some of your .bat &or .cmd backed up?
Maybe, green protected means they're included with backup settings instructions.
Whether they're actually backed up.  IDK
Sorry, I don't use overlays.
Have you added .bat & .cmd file types to a "What" category?  Maybe, Other File Types?

Oh, you do write....they have overlays.

Lets hear from Community

My product version was fetched using a macro. In my previous post, the forum software fetched the previous version number instead of the current version. I am actually using the current version: 22.23.10.10.

I ran LiveUpdate and restarted.

I ran Autofix, and a green banner said "We did not find any issues with Norton 360". The results are:

Norton 360
22.23.10.10
Windows 10 Home
19041.1.amd64fre.vb_release.191206-1406
Norton Autofix Results: 0 item(s)

One of the paths is:

%userProfile%\Documents\development\batch\

The folder contains .bat, .cmd, and .txt files. For each file type, about half show a green (protected) overlay, and the other half are blue (unprotected). I can't find any difference between between files that backed up and files that are not being backed up. There are no files with a missing overlay, so Norton knows it should be backing up these files, but it isn't for some reason.

I am using 65 GB of 75 GB total.

Thanks for the suggestions. Is there anything else I can try?

Shane.

I have Norton 360 Platinum Plus I 22.22.11.12.

Um, current Norton 360 = 22.23.10.10

Run Norton Autofix to detect and repair common problems
https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v15756942

Please run Norton LiveUpdate + Restart (not Shut down) machine.

Be sure you are using the Restart command. Not 'Shut down' and startup again if you have Windows Fast Startup feature enabled. If you use Windows 8/8.1, 10 or 11, there can be an issue with the Windows Fast Startup feature.. See more information here. (credit peterweb)
Turn On or Off Fast Startup - W10 - W11

Please confirm Norton 22.23.10.10

I have a lot of files that are not being backed up.

Um, what's file extensions...what's file path?
And those files are added to your backup settings?

And you've tried Add to Backup - against those files?
