Some real concerns about Anti-theft

Just purchased this today, and I've got some real concerns as to the value of this product.

It is giving me a location for my laptop which isn't remotely close - it's over 40km away! And this is tracking via Wi-fi, not IP address - Wi-fi tracking is supposed to give more accurate results . . .

So, given that, I can't see how this would be at all useful in locating my laptop, should it be stolen.

Also, shouldn't this program "hide" somehow so that if a thief does get my laptop, he can't just make uninstalling Anti-theft the first thing he does?

Any collective wisdom on these issues? Am I doing something wrong? I feel completely underwhelmed, at the least, and ripped off, at the most, by this purchase . . .

Hi korichards.

Welcome to the Norton Community Forums. :smileyhappy:

The first place I used Norton Anti-Theft (NAT) was on a mobile phone which has GPS - that gave some very good fixes but even then only in the right circumstances.  In my opinion the location of non-GPS enabled devices such as laptops is unlikely to be good enough to go and physically find the device without other pointers.

Location using Wi-Fi is dependent on how good a coverage Norton have for your country.  I believe it is much better in the USA than in a number of other places but it should be improving as they get more data.  Can you tell us which country you are in?

NAT also has a number of other features which can help if your device is lost or stolen and you need to consider the whole package when deciding if it is worth the cost to you.

If you really are unhappy Norton offer a very good refund system which I believe if valid for the first 60 days of purchase, so I suggest you try it for a little bit longer and then if you still feel that it is not for you, have a look at this link.

I hope that helps.  Please feel free to come back with any questions and do keep us advised on what you decide to do.

All the best.

P.S.  I am not using the current version of NAT as all the features I now need are in Norton Mobile Security which I use to protect my smartphone.  I protect my laptop, which I do not take out, in other ways.  Therefore I cannot claim to be "up to date" on the latest version of NAT.

Thanks Andmike, appreciate the response. Re: the coverage - I'm in Canada. Toronto, specifically, so if the coverage should be good anywhere, it's here.

Regarding the "hidden" mode - does anyone have opinions about that? As far as I'm concerned, if thieves can see that Anti Theft is on the device, well then they'll just uninstall and the whole product is kind of moot at that point.

Hi Korichards

As far as i can remember with Norton Anti-Theft (NAT) and PC's to uninstall

NAT requires the user to enter the Norton Account details linked to the

NAT product.

Which means the Norton Account email address and password are needed

for uninstall of NAT from the PC.

This was from my tests a year or so ago and things may have changed.

Cheers. :smileywink:

Thanks for the comments. I went ahead and got a refund for NAT, as the location finding was terribly off.

Kudos to Norton for the refund process - very quick and professional. :smileyhappy:
