I was here almost a month ago and you folks got me clean of the BACKDOOR virus! Well my daughter is obviously hanging out on the wrong side of the "cybertracks" and got something again.
Windows XP home and NIS 2010 installed. Also have installed malwarebytes and superantispyware and have been running them almost to obsession.
My daughter told me that she thought something happened when a bogus window popped from "windows XP security" saying that viruses have been detected and to click here to remove them. She didn't but took it upon herself to run a full Norton scan which came up clean. She then got me and I tried to run a Malwarebytes scan but it would not open. Then I ran an antispyware scan which turned up 8 things of which I do not recall and it "cleaned" them.
Restarted the computer and had a quick flash of the BSOD and then black screen. Another restart got windows to open but now most of the programs refuse to open or the window pops up asking what program you want to open it with (just like when you try to open a file that doesn't have the supporting program).
I can run knoppix 6.2 DVD while booting from the DVD drive thank god! But I tried to boot the Norton CD to do a full scan but it will not boot. I tried to reinstall malwarebytes from a USB drive but I get the same "what program to use" window and can't install it. No internet and my external SATA drives are undetected.
Could some of the undetected junk by Norton during downloading be because she uses Firefox instead of IE?
