Can't we all just get along!!!
Gees, I turn on my computer today and norton ran off on Speedfan 434. it detects the uninstaller app, c:\program files\speedfan\uninstall.exe and the main install package www . almico . com / speedfan434.exe
Ran it by virus total and it came back clean but norton was the only one there that detected it as anything bad.
ran the scan in safe mode with system restore off. everything clean.
Anyone else get this ? I've been using Speedfan for years and I trust the guy. he's recommended by Maximum pc and many other hardware sites and a trusted Fan monitoring software program.
also like to note that norton detects it when you try and download it now. I also hit the submit button on all the files to norton. I am not blaming norton or anything I just want my two hours back. LOL
I have opened a case and escalated this. Thanks for the notification.
John
Symantec Security Response
Security Response has taken another look at the file in question and the inaccurate Downloader detection has been removed. Please note that this program was not specifically targetted for detection and should in no way been considered viral. This update will be contained in Rapid Release definitions, available on our FTP site, within sequence folder 83836 or greater. Please allow approximately 30-60 minutes for this folder to appear in the following location: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/AVDEFS/norton_antivirus/rapidrelease/sequence/
figured out the Rapid Release definitions ran them after I restored Speedfan 434. everythings back to normal again. Big thanks to you guys for updating the definitions so fast.
Still would like my three hours back. I swear I didn't have that gray hair when I woke up.
Just to be clear, you downloaded and ran the “symrapidreleasedefsv5i32.exe” file, or one of the similarly named files in the numbered folder, correct?
Yep that would be the one. norton has updated it's self with new definitions and everythings fine.. Also contacted the software maker and told him the new definitions are no longer detecting his software as a Trojan. he removed his comment about Norton.
I just double checked.
read on the guys webpage....
NOTE : it seems that the latest Norton Antivirus WRONGLY identifies SpeedFan as a trojan. It is interesting to note that it is stating this on a version that was released months ago. Either Norton was able to find a virus with a three months delay or it is showing a false positive now. In both cases it is not a good thing for its customers. I tried to contact Symantec, but was unable to. This situation is really upsetting. If you are a Symantec customer, please ask for clarification and let me know.
