Recently I began having issues in Chrome (Edge works fine) where I attempt to unlock my password vault, and I get a spinning wheel ad infinitum. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome, which did not change any behavior. I also restarted, which did not change any behavior.
Particulars:
Chrome is Version 131.0.6778.70 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Windows is Windows 11 Pro Build 22635.4445
Did you try Chrome → Reset settings chrome://settings/reset?
Did you also remove Chrome user profile?
Do you run Chrome Sync?
Did you try new default Chrome profile with just Norton Password Manager…as test?
Chrome v131.0.6778.70 + Norton Password Manager v8.2.2.529…okay, my side.
Thank you, bjm, for the questions/suggestions. I only went through the Chrome uninstall/reinstall process, but will try the things you’ve recommended and will report back later today.
Had you tried another browser?
Had you also tried Sign Out all Norton + reinstall Norton Password Manager extension?
Do you run Chrome Sync?
Does VPN off help?

I also have NPM installed on my home PC (this is my work laptop), so I’m curious to see if this is an issue specific to my laptop, which I suspect to be the case, or a more systemic issue. When I get home this evening I will know more.
REALLY appreciate your thoughtful suggestions, @bjm
Just made it home from work, and unfortunately I’m seeing this same issue on my home PC using MS Edge. I have a hunch this may be an issue in Norton’s back-end services, so I’m going to pause this debug effort overnight and see if things work tomorrow.
Home PC is working again - no idea why PWM on Edge exhibited the same issue last night as I’m seeing on my work laptop. However, on my work laptop NPM on Edge and Chrome is still spinning away following a sign-in after rebooting early this morning. Either my OS has issues (corruption, warranting an OS reload?) or something janky is going on with our security software loaded onto the work laptop. The good news is that I can get to the passwords via the web, but of course the bad news is that I lose the option to automatically fill the passwords.
I can concur with the OP regarding the PWM not opening and spinning to no end, Chrome based Opera GX. At times, not very often, PWM will sync and open on the first try. The only way I have found that makes it usable is close Opera GX and reopen it. PWM will load on its 2nd attempt. Not everyone may be seeing this, it should be address accordingly.
Edited: Suggesting R&R of Chrome or the extension is nonsense. Norton needs to own it, its their issue.
No progress to report, tbh. It’s still as described, although even with the spinning wheel on unlocking the vault, I eventually get the red NPM icon that I’ve pinned in the add-on area to do the drop down and provide passwords. But it’s spotty… sometimes I get a blank drop-down box, but eventually it responds. It’s as if the handshake between the pieces of NPM has been lost somehow.
I am having the same problem with the time it takes for Password Manager to open in Chrome, Edge & Firefox. Over the last few months, it has become slower and slower, now taking as much as 20 seconds to connect and activate. I’ve tried everything mentioned here, but no luck.
My connection is fibre optic, right into my PC’s, i7 processor and all the right stuff, but…
I am also getting fed up with the popups and upsells - I don’t have the problems that Norton has allegedly found. That’s another topic but indicative of how the Company appears to be going.
@SRWD I’m with you on the upsell. If Symantec spent the resources they’ve used to integrate the upsell pop-ups on development and validation, I suspect we would not be having a conversation around this issue.
More learnings about this since my original post. NPM is generally working, but the spinning wheel is annoying. If I close the spinning wheel tab, NPM usually works. I can’t say that with 100 percent confidence, but it does seem to be the case.
Like others, I’m also wondering if I’ll renew my 10 licenses, or go with another solution that doesn’t ping me several times a day about buying another Symantec package.
