Spoof email from Norton?

I'm looking for an email address at Symantec to forward what I think may be a spoof email I received about my Nortons AV for Mac. It looks very convincing, but it's asking me to activate my NAV when I've had it installed and updated for years. It had my name and email address correct. Not sure avout the serial no. since I don't know what it is, sorry. Don't want to click on any links.

Thanks - so it is a spoof then? Do Symantec even read these forums? Shouldn't they at least respond to this kind of spoof, by providing an email like spoof@symantec.com similar to PayPal?

But more importantly where did they get my name, email address & serial no.? I wonder if Symantec have been hacked and they are keeping very quiet about it?

Sorry, just realised Symantec got hacked end of last year. Nice of them to let us know to what extent ....

Kryten602 --  Thank you for forwarding the email to me. It is indeed from Symantec/Norton and is not a spoof. It would appear that your copy of Norton Antivirus for Mac has been installed but not activated. I'm going to ask someone from the Mac team to provide steps on how to activate it.

I hope I've put your mind at ease. Thank you for using Norton products.

Cheers,

Dave

From my understanding, this was sent because you have not activated yet.  You should have received an activation key (unless you were running a trial version which has expired, in which case you need to purchase a key).  Is this NAV 12 or NIS 5, or an earlier version?

I got a similar email as did my mom.  I've used your product for years and NEVER received anything of this nature.

Can you explain why it is that if I have "downloaded but not activated" the product that I can run live update and download these updates?

I'm not sure, possibly there's some disconnect in the activation information, between the product and the info that generated the email.  We are researching this internally because there have been multiple reports.

Thanks Lee - Yes I received in my comformation email (Order no. NP214267176) a product key and a serial no. on 16th July 2012. It was a renewal so,I don't know anything about an Activation key, you tell me!! All I know is it works and I update from time to time. Nortons AV 11.1 (102).

Since it's NAV 11, the email definitely sounds erroneous.  The concept of activation only applies to NAV 12 and beyond.

Sorry for the inconvenience, we are investigating.

Why is Symantec not able to produce a much simpler procedure to install their software? Why does it require a Serial no., a Product Key AND an Activation Key?

You should only need one of those, unless you are also using a Symantec product on a PC.  The Mac products adopted the Activation Key method with NAV 12/NIS 5.  NAV 11 uses a subscription key.

The serial number is probably just for reference, so your registration/subscription info can be looked up by Support, if necessary.  I don't think it's used anywhere internally.
