Hi,
I got Norton Internet Security installed on two laptops, one has Win7 64-bit, the other runs WinXP 32-bit. So, how can I create an exception for a particular port (number), a particular application or a particular executable file??
The troublesome application is ReadyShare Printer (from NetGear routers), which works just fine on my Win7 laptop; I can see the printer and print and scan without any difficulty while my printer is USB-connected to my NetGear router.
However, on the other WinXP laptop, things are more troublesome. Both laptops have Norton Internet Security (latest version) and the latest version of NETGEAR USB control Center (v.1.32) for a WNDR3800 router. The Norton settings are the same on both laptops.
So, on Win7 all is ok, but on the WinXP laptop I just can't get the printer to show up in the NETGEAR USB control Center with the same Norton settings as on the Win7 laptop.
In Norton there is the setting: Trust Level. You can find that setting at: Main-pane > Settings > Network > Smart Firewall > Trust Control (Configure) > Local Area Connection (in the pull-down menu left-side) > Edit (under Network Details) > Now you'll see a pane with the option Trust Level, which you can edit. There are 4 possibilities: Full Trust, Shared, Protected and Restricted. On both my laptops (Win7 and WinXP) the Trust level is SHARED.
With Trust Level = Shared, the NETGEAR USB control Center shows the printer on the Win7 laptop, but not on the WinXP laptop. On the WinXP laptop, if I change the Trust Level to FULL TRUST, then the printer shows up in the NETGEAR USB control Center and all works just fine.
In WinXP the printer also shows up in the NETGEAR USB control Center if I turn OFF the option Stealth_Blocked_Ports. (The option can be found in .... Smart Firewall > Advanced Options (Configure) > Stealth Blocked Ports.)
The 'problem', if I may call it that way, may be that NIS behaves differenct on Win7 than on WinXP. Off course, it could also be that it is NETGEAR USB control Center that behaves different under WinXP and Win7, I simply don't know?!
So, in WinXP there are two solutions for getting the printer to appear in NETGEAR USB control Center (Trust Level = Full Trust OR Stealth Blocked Ports = OFF)
The thing is, none of the two solutions I like. So I got a 2 questions:
First, is there anyone who could explain why the NETGEAR USB control Center works fine on Win7 and not on WinXP while the NIS settings on both computers are the same.
Second, on the WinXP laptop, what should I tune or tweak in Norton in order to get the printer showing up in the NETGEAR USB control Center while having in Norton the options Trust Level = SHARED, and Stealth Blocked Ports = ON ??
Thanks,
johan
