Still "could not connect server.."

After the latest update I am having problem getting emails. I turned off so-called “smart firewall” and gave all permissions to my email client (Thunderbird), disabled “Auto-protect” but still getting “could not connect to server pop.hostinger, connection was refused” error!. What should I do more? Should I completely uninstall Norton to get my emails back?

are you running Norton VPN?

AI Overview
Norton’s email protection features, especially Norton 360’s Email Protection can sometimes interfere with the functionality of email clients like Thunderbird. This interference can manifest as issues with sending, receiving, or even general connectivity to email servers. To resolve these issues, you may need to add Thunderbird as an allowed program in Norton’s firewall, confirm security exceptions for your email accounts within Thunderbird, or even temporarily disable Norton’s Email Protection to ensure compatibility.

Troubleshooting Steps:

1. Add Thunderbird as an Allowed Program:

Ensure that Thunderbird is listed as an allowed program in Norton’s firewall settings. This prevents Norton from blocking Thunderbird’s communication with email servers.

2. Confirm Security Exceptions:

If Thunderbird is not receiving or sending emails, you might need to create a security exception for the email connection within Thunderbird. This allows Norton’s Email Protection to understand that this specific connection is safe and should not be blocked.

3. Disable Email Protection (Temporary):

If the above steps don’t resolve the issue, you can try temporarily disabling Norton’s Email Protection within the Norton application’s advanced security settings. This will allow you to test if the email protection is causing the conflict.

4. Check for Invalid Certificates:

After installing Norton, third-party email clients like Thunderbird might display errors about invalid server certificates. To resolve this, you may need to export Norton’s Email Protection certificate and import it into Thunderbird’s certificate store.

5. Norton VPN:

If you are using Norton’s VPN, ensure it’s not blocking Thunderbird’s access to your email server by adding Thunderbird to the VPN’s Split Tunnel settings.

6. Check for Spam Filters:

Ensure that Norton’s AntiSpam feature is not incorrectly tagging emails from legitimate senders. You can review and adjust the Blocked and Allowed lists within Norton.

7. Update Thunderbird:

Make sure you are using the latest version of Thunderbird to ensure compatibility with Norton and other security software.

8. Check for VPN Conflicts:

If you are using Norton’s VPN, it may interfere with Thunderbird’s ability to connect to email servers. Consider adding Thunderbird to the VPN’s Split Tunnel settings or temporarily disabling the VPN to see if it resolves the issue.

9. Consult Norton Support:

If none of the above steps resolve the problem, it’s best to consult Norton support for specific guidance related to your Norton product and Thunderbird setup.

Thnaks for the reply. No, I am not using Norton VPN. I disabled email protection (probably permanently) and I added Thunderbird to allowed programs. For the last couple of days I can receive emails now. Hopefully it won’t break again.
