Subscriptions and Upgrades Clarified

Somehow it doesn't seem fair to me that by renewing for $49.99 I am still only protected for 1 PC, but if would have paid the same

$49.99 for a retail upgrade with CD then I would be protected for up to 3 PCs.

Me neither, though I suppose you could always just let your current supscription expire and then purchase a new one that covers 3 PCs (there's a link in Norton Account for me which says add computers).

Of course it would make more sense if the license automatically upgraded to 3 PCs when you renewed.

I purchased (and installed) NIS 2007 around 15 to 18 months ago. Obviously the subscription that was included in that package has run out. Would there be anything preventing me from purchasing another copy of the 2007 version and using the key from that, to get another 12 months of updates? Also, should this work with Systemworks, as well?

For that matter, would it be possible to purchase a still older version, and use its key in the same fashion? If so, what is the oldest version from which the key should work, for a new 12 month autoupdate subscription for the 2007 or 2008 products?

PMJI but I've been off line for longer than usual, like since last night <g>

Is there some reason why you would not purchase a copy of NIS 2008 which already works better than NIS 2007 and which allows you to get a free update to NIS 2009 when it comes out later this year -- that will take over any unexpired portion of your subscription if I understand correctly the way things work.

So...if I have 2007 installed, and do the free update to 2008, I don't still qualify for the free update to 2009? My impression from earlier in this thread was that, when you purchase a retail copy of NIS (and possibly NSW too), you are essentially purchasing a 12 month subscription that just starts when you install the product or use the product key. I thought that Tony_Weiss was saying that the version updates to the software were always free. Is that incorrect, then?

To use Tony's method, here's an example:

Chris buys Norton Internet Security 2007 on March 1st, 2007. This includes a ONE YEAR SUBSCRIPTION for Norton Internet Security and the Norton Internet Security 2007 software. He receives an extra copy of Norton Internet Security 2007 (in a retail box), as a gift, or bundled with some piece of hardware, or a surplus copy from his company upgrading their computers, or some other similar scenario. Rather than try to return it to a store, he sticks it on a shelf and forgets about it.

Now he has a subscription that is valid through March 1, 2008. Additionally, he now has an extra copy of Norton Internet Security 2007, which also includes a ONE YEAR SUBSCRIPTION for Norton Internet Security and the Norton Internet Security 2007 software.

On December 1st, 2007, Chris decides to upgrade to Norton Internet Security 2008. He downloads the FREE UPGRADE for NIS 2008.

Now he has Norton Internet Security 2008 installed, with a subscription that is still valid through March 1st, 2008. Additionally, he still has his extra copy of Norton Internet Security 2007, complete with its ONE YEAR SUBSCRIPTION for Norton Internet Security and the Norton Internet Security 2007 software.

Now...in this case, would he be able to use the key code from his extra copy of NIS 2007 to add a year of free Liveupdate updates on March 1st, 2008, and still be able to download the FREE UPGRADE to NIS 2009, when it comes out? Or is the FREE UPGRADE only good from one version to the next?

If you're talking about the specifics of Norton Internet Security 2009, we do not have that information yet. I don't imagine it will be much different, but I certainly can't guarantee that your scenario will work this way for NIS 2009.

However, yes, you are correct. Barring any drastic change in how FREE UPDATES will work for NIS 2009, this should work as you describe. In this situation, I would recommend using the Activation Key on this program as close to your expiration time as possible. The existing subscription will not be added to the "extra copy" subscription time, it will just be the duration of the "extra copy" subscription time. This situation is also making a few of assumptions, like that "extra copy" has a year subscription on it, and that it hasn't been used on another system during that time. Thanks!

That's great to know. My dad gets extra copies of software from his work, either from surplus copies for upgrades, or stuff as giveaways for clients. He had an extra copy of 2007 that he hadn't installed, and didn't have anyone left to give it to (as he has copies of 2008 for giveaways now), so he let me have it. I just wanted to make sure this would work before I tried it.

Thanx a bunch!

I think I understand the subscription issue but I would like a clarification on my specific issue.

I have 29 days remaining on NIS 2007. Last night I purchased an upgrade to NIS 2008 but have yet to install it. It came with a NEW product key.

If I install 2008 now using the NEW product key, I will loose the 29 days remaining on 2007 correct?

The reason I went this route was because I was told that a subscription renewal would only be good for one computer, even though my 2007 license is for three users.  What sense does that make? Why can't a loyal Norton customer renew a subscription for all three computers?

Following this reasoning, I cannot take advantage of the upgrade to 2009 when it becomes available, because based upon the calendar date of my renewal, if I have 2009 on my machine at the time of renewal next year, I can only renew my subscription (as I assume 2010 will not yet be ready) and then I have the issue of a subscription renewal being only for one computer.

If you install and activate the UPGRADE (which is really a full retail version at a discounted price) of Norton Internet Security 2008, your remaining existing subscription time is not added to the subscription time give by the NEW activation key. So for your first question, you are correct.

For the second, however, you have been given some incorrect information. When you renew your subscription to a product, the "can be installed on up to 3 PCs" license is carried over as well. Likewise, if you have a product that "can be installed on one PC", this too is carried over when you renew. The only change the renewal makes is to extend the subscription period; it will NOT change a license from a "3 PC" to a "1 PC", or the other way around. We agree - a loyal customer should be able to renew their existing subscription. I apologize for the confusion.

Please send me a Private Message (click the  in the upper right of the Forum) with the information of the Symantec Employee who provided this information to you. I want to be sure that we all understand the process. Thanks!

The Private message should be on it's way to you.  So what options do I have now?

Can I use the 2008 upgrade from the Norton website and then use the new key when the subscription expires, or should I download the purchased product and enter the 2007 old key?

If the former, what happens to my account if I never download the purchased product from the email link?

Oh, and why is the website upgrade for 2008 a larger files size than what the email purchased product indicates?

I think by "2008 upgrade from the Norton website" you mean the FREE UPDATE to NIS 2008 that is available to all NIS users with a current NIS subscription. Is this correct? Then yes, you can install the free update to NIS 2008, which when installed will pickup your current subscription for the remaining days. This is the best way to go.

Your account and download will be waiting for you. See this site for information on retrieving that download info. Be sure to keep your Order Number information to retrieve the product at the later date.

What is the download size difference is listed on both the site and the email? Thanks!

You have answered my questions - Thanks.

I assume that if I download 2008 for the remaining days, I can use my new product key to activate the subscription renewal when that date comes due.

The file size difference is as follows: 2008 FREE UPDATE = 68MB    File size for purchased 2008 upgrade as indicated in the email order confirmation = 61MB  (but has net yet been downloaded).

Hi,

I have a quick question about subscriptions.

I have a 3-licence NIS2008 product. All of them are currently being used by a computer. HOWEVER, one of them (my laptop) is broken and I bought a new laptop to replace it. Now, are all my licenses used up and I have to buy a NEW license? or can i somehow transfer the old one over to my new laptop?

Thanks in advance,

Eric

Hi Eric,

I would recommend that you contact our Customer Support team to let them know the situation, and they will be able to your new system activated. Let me know if you have any problems with it. Thanks!

I can find out for you, but most likely it's some updates that you would get through LiveUpdate. Thanks!

this post is about the 360 product.. not NIS....  and it's not exactly the same situation.... but it's close...  i bet they can deactivate your broken laptop and let you install it again.... why don't you try the advice in the other post and chat with a support rep....

edit:  haha those other posts were not that when i started answering this...

Hi Tony,

Thanks so much for the advice. I have contacted them via email and hopefully hear back soon!

Sincerely,

Eric

Tony,

One last question, then I'm done. In the above posts, we've mentioned the Free Update for Norton Internet Security to the 2008 version. Is there a similar Free Update for Norton Systemworks to its 2008 version, or not? And if so, could you provide the link to it, as well?

Thanks again!

ok, i had nav 2006, it ended and i upgraded to nis 2008. how do i install on my laptop to protect it also? i cannot figure it out… help…thanks

Hello,

Just today, I had bought a  3-pc license of norton internet security 2007. (I have not still installed it!) And when browsing the norton community, i happened to come by this thread which i found very interesting.

Now i have 2 doubts:

1. If i install it, can i upgrade it to NIS 2009 for free when it is out? (I will have my subscription valid till next Jul 2009, right?)

2. And in case, after installing on 3 pcs (for which i have a license) and in  the future, if i happen to format my laptop, can i reinstall my NIS 2007 on it without any problems of having to buy a new key? (Do i have to deactivate one license in my account and then reinstall it or do i have to contact the customer care about it?)

Sorry if i am confusing all you guys with my questions. I didnt know how to frame them in a simple manner.

Why did you buy a licence for NIS 2007 when NIS 2008 is the current version (and is much better)?

However I understand that if you install it you can upgrade on line to NIS2008 without charge as long as your subscription is not expired and also that you will be able to upgrade on line to NIS 2009 when released, again if you subscription has not expired.

In my experience when you reinstall NIS from a downloaded file, or from media, if you have created a Norton Account you will get a screen that gives choices one of which is Use an existing key and if you select that it goes off and checks to see what you have in your Norton Account and uses that if the subscription is still valid.

But make sure you copy of NIS to use for installing is not stored on the laptop or any other computer ....
