So...if I have 2007 installed, and do the free update to 2008, I don't still qualify for the free update to 2009? My impression from earlier in this thread was that, when you purchase a retail copy of NIS (and possibly NSW too), you are essentially purchasing a 12 month subscription that just starts when you install the product or use the product key. I thought that Tony_Weiss was saying that the version updates to the software were always free. Is that incorrect, then?
To use Tony's method, here's an example:
Chris buys Norton Internet Security 2007 on March 1st, 2007. This includes a ONE YEAR SUBSCRIPTION for Norton Internet Security and the Norton Internet Security 2007 software. He receives an extra copy of Norton Internet Security 2007 (in a retail box), as a gift, or bundled with some piece of hardware, or a surplus copy from his company upgrading their computers, or some other similar scenario. Rather than try to return it to a store, he sticks it on a shelf and forgets about it.
Now he has a subscription that is valid through March 1, 2008. Additionally, he now has an extra copy of Norton Internet Security 2007, which also includes a ONE YEAR SUBSCRIPTION for Norton Internet Security and the Norton Internet Security 2007 software.
On December 1st, 2007, Chris decides to upgrade to Norton Internet Security 2008. He downloads the FREE UPGRADE for NIS 2008.
Now he has Norton Internet Security 2008 installed, with a subscription that is still valid through March 1st, 2008. Additionally, he still has his extra copy of Norton Internet Security 2007, complete with its ONE YEAR SUBSCRIPTION for Norton Internet Security and the Norton Internet Security 2007 software.
Now...in this case, would he be able to use the key code from his extra copy of NIS 2007 to add a year of free Liveupdate updates on March 1st, 2008, and still be able to download the FREE UPGRADE to NIS 2009, when it comes out? Or is the FREE UPGRADE only good from one version to the next?
