Suddenly fewer items scanned

About a month ago, I noticed that my scans were including about 3600 fewer processes and start-up items, as well as about 500 fewer files and directories.  Didn't know why that would be.  Did full system scans and used Power Eraser . . . no risks were found.  I recently upgraded my NIS product, and the first scan after that had the normal number of items scanned.  The next scan after that again included about 3600 fewer processes and start-up items.

And while this was going on, all the scan details said that there were 0 Trusted Files and 0 Skipped Files.

So, I'm wondering why files are being skipped/trusted while the scan details say otherwise?

Hi, also if you go to the Norton GUI, select the Performance tab, and click on Norton Insight, it will scan all running processes. If you then select ALL Files, it will scan your computer and then you will have a higher percentage of files not needing to be scanned, as Norton then treats them as trusted.

This is why your file count, will always vary somewhat.

Hi BAA40DA909:

Further to Apostolos' comments, elsewhere posted some interesting stats here on how the size of the downloaded Virus Definition set can affect the number of items scanned during the subsequent QuickScan.

Since you recently upgraded your NIS product, I believe it's normal for this upgrade to trigger an initial scan where 0 files are trusted/skipped to force a deep scan of all files on your system.  Then, after the initial  Norton Insight task runs during idle mode and updates the application trust rating for every program installed on your system, the Norton Insight window mentioned in F4E's post # 3  should correctly display the correct % of trusted (safe) Files to Skip on your system.

The trust ratings of your programs are automatically updated about once a day by this background Norton Insight task when your system is idle, but you can trigger the update manually any time you wish by going to Performance | Norton Tasks and clicking the yellow run button beside the name of the task.
