Norton 360 Cloud backup for Windows should support backing up from a network drive. I store most of my data on a network attached storage (NAS) drive but Norton backup will not accept this drive as a source for files in a backup set. This is a serious limitation. It makes your backup service useless to me.
When I attempt to add files to a new backup set, I can see my network drive in the list of available folders, but when I select that drive, I get a message saying
“Error Please select files from locally attached drives only. Files on network drives can not be included in the backup.” (See the attached screenshot)
Why is this? Windows sees the drive and its files are fully accessible. I can access all of the files in the Windows Explorer and other applications. I am sure that the standard Windows file API's support access to this drive and the files it contains. But Norton Backup will not backup the files on this drive!
I am running NortonLifeLock (also seems to be known as Norton 360) version 22.21.5.44 on the latest update of Windows 10 on a Dell XPS15 laptop. My subscription is active.
Please fix this serious and unnecessary problem.
Thanks
I just did a test using my home server. I chose a top level folder on my server and mapped it to a drive letter. I then went to my backup set and was able to add that folder to my backup set and it did get backed up.
So with a little housekeeping, you should be able to do the same thing. Create a master folder for all the folders/files you want to back up. Then map that folder to a drive letter. Then move all the folders and files into that folder that you want to backup. Add that folder to your backup set and then run the backup to test.
Thanks for your reply. Yes, the drive is assigned a letter by the Windows Map Network Drive command. This is visible in Windows Explorer and in the folder selection dialog for the Norton Backup utility. The files are not all in the top level folder but are mainly in sub-folders and I am trying to backup the entire folders, not individual files.
I have tried selecting the individual sub-folders when creating a backup set. The Norton Backup application allows me to select them, but when I attempt to save the backup set I get the error message I indicated in my original posting.
Does your NAS get assigned a drive letter in Windows Explorer? Is all the data that you want to backup from the NAS in a master folder? If so, maybe mapping that folder to a drive letter will allow you to backup the files????
