Surprisingly low detection rate

Hey guys!

I just downloaded this ZIP archive containing 3732 viruses to check how Norton 360 will work. I was VERY surprised when scan was finished. Norton 360 has detected only 201 file!!! :(

I'm not about to download something like that, even to test. What I can suggest is you turn OFF Smart definitions  in your Norton product and scan again. With Smart definitions ON, the size of the definition downloads is reduced by not downloading very old, and usually infrequently used malware definitions.

The file you downloaded may have old exploits that have been fixed by updates to Windows and browser updates over time. These are not usually an issue with most users that have kept their systems up to date, and the bad guys are not using them as much because the target base is so small.

Hi qwas,

In the latest Dennis Technology Labs test discussed today in PC Mag, Norton did extremely well in detecting and blocking malware, scoring highest in Protection rating among the products tested (The lead though, is that Microsoft Security Essentials and McAfee failed to achieve certification!).  There are all sorts of problems with results that are obtained by simply downloading a zip file full of malware, which is why your results are at odds with Dennis Technology Labs.
