Suspected spam messages are not moved into the AntiSpam folder

Since upgrading to NIS 2010 I have a problem with email. I use Outlook Express as my mail client.

Whilst I still have an Antispam email folder, suspected spam doesn't get swept into it. My computer sometimes chimes with the 'you got mail' sound but I can't always see that I have received anything. I have discovered today that mail is being swept straight into a folder (which I usually keep hidden) rather than into the antispam folder- goodness knows why as the folder is titled 'Dad'. I have checked the message rules, and indeed there is an auto generated rule that says all messages containing [Norton AntiSpam] should go to 'Dad' folder. As it is an auto generated rule there is no option to change it - any ideas? Why has t done this & how do I change it?

Also, since upgrading, the long list of blocked senders that I previously had seems to have disappeared - no blocked senders showing at present.

Turning off Antispam did enable the rule to be modified, however when I re-enabled AntiSpan in Norton after I re-launched Outlook Express, Norton re-configured itself & changed the rule back to the 'Dads' folder again.

I turned off AntiSpam again & deleted the rule completely then set up a manual rule, selecting the AntiSpam Folder as the destination. Again, when I re-enabled Norton, it reconfigured and added the auto rule again, selecting the 'Dads' folder. So now I have two rules, both relating to 'subject line containing Norton AntiSpam', one saying to place the message in 'Dads' & the other saying to place it in 'Norton Anti Spam' - not sure which one will take preference next time spam is received!

I have now discovered someone else who has the same problem - since upgrading Norton has been sweeping suspected Spam into a folder entitled 'Receipts' rather than the AntiSpam folder.

Any other ideas?

HI raylove

OK.You shouldn't delete the autogenerated rule (bacuse antispam puts it back) just uncheck it and create and use your custom rule.

Let me know how that goes.

Hi raylove

Here are some instructions I gave to another poster on how to achieve what you want

Turn off Antispam in NIS. Open OE. Uncheck the Autogenerated Rule. Add a new rule of your own. When using "Where the subject line contains specific words" you should click on the underlined  "contains specific words" and put in [Norton AntiSpam]. However the box will not allow you to type a space in it so use something like Notepad to type [Norton AntiSpam] then copy and paste it into the box and choose add.  Now you can do anything you wish with that rule and the Autogenerated rule will stay off when you go to turn back on the Antispam feature in NIS settings..

Let me know how this goes

Thanks, that did it - and thanks for the second post, I was just starting to wonder how to get that space in there!

Before I received this last post I had read Nortons help pages which explained that when Norton configures the mail client it creates the antispam folder. So I tried deleting the folder completely then disabling AntiSpam etc... to see if it would create a new AntiSpam folder & link the rule to it. It didn't, it just went for the 'Dads' folder again!

I have now added the AntiSpam folder manually & done what you suggested.

:smileyvery-happy:

Is the “Dad’s” folder a renamed folder from the default list of folders?

Hi raylove

Glad you got it done. The space had me going also when I first did it but it turns out overall to be a nice fix for anyone wanting to put spam in a different folder.

Take care.

raylove - I've updated NIS for several years now and pretty much every time I click on that "Install now" tab, and see the program start updating, I suddenly remember that I wanted to copy that "Blocked E-Mail" listing.  I would love to see an option, like the "Save your Identify Safe" sites has or at least a warning about "Your auto-blocked list will now be deleted" and give me a chance to hand copy them.

Glad the Forum members could help you with your other problem.

dbrisendine,

No, the 'Dads' folder is an old folder which I've had for some years. It was a new folder when I made it, not renamed. I have had Norton for some years & the allocation of spam to the correct folder has never been an issue before - it has always survived updates & upgrades.

Seems like I'm not the only one with this problem. Also, as mentioned, after posting the initial query I contacted the only person that I know who uses NIS 2010 & has upgraded - she hadn't been aware of the problem, but when she checked, her spam was also being mis-directed to an old folder rather than the spam folder.

The whole basis of AntiSpam in 2010 has changed from previous years and they have adopted the technology and philosophy of the Enterprise versions. Most of the spam data is now held "in the clouds" and not on your computer, rather like Norton Insight I suppose.

There is a message of explanation on this somewhere in the Forum but unfortunately it was not made sticky however the Advanced search here did find it for me:

Re: Norton Antispam does not detect spam emails

This was posted by Chester and the red name indicates he is a Symantec Staffer so clearly he knows the background. Read that and any others from him in that thread.

Hope that helps.

Hi raylove

Please try this and let us know if this works for you

Turn Off NIS Antispam, Close & open Outlook Express.  Now Antispam is not integrated with Outlook Express

Delete the 'Dad' folder, it moves to Deleted Items folder. Empty the Deleted Items Folder as well

Clear both the manual and autogenerated rules.

Enable NIS Antispam, Close and Open Outlook Express. Norton AntiSpam Folder will be created & a rule will be created to move Spam Emails to NAS Folder

Thanks

Kavitha

Thanks, but the previous solution has now worked for me - disable the auto rule & create my own manual one. There is stuff that I want in the Dad folder so to delete it I would have to move stuff around, and as I now have a solution that ppears to have worked, I can't be bothered. I'll bear this in mind though if I get further trouble.

I would say that at one point I did delete the NortonAntiSpam folder and after I disabled Norton, closed & opened OE then re-enabled Norton, it did NOT create an AntiSpam folder. It simply re-integrated with the Dad folder. I guess if I were to delete the Dad folder it wouldn't be able to integrate with that one, however, as mentioned, I only know one other person who has NIS 2010, & hers also integrates with the wrong folder (which she calls 'Register') so I have no reason to think that by deleting Dad it wouldn't just pick a nother folder.

Thanks for the suggestion though!

Hi.

Turns out the previous solution didn't work as I thought it had. Although I haven't had any spam since the last post, the message rule is set correctly so I assume that suspected incoming spam WOULD be swept to the AntiSpam folder. However, I discovered today that if I receive an email that is NOT identified as spam, then if I click the Norton icon on the toolbar and select 'This is spam' - it STILL puts the email into the 'Dads' folder.

I tried clicking on the norton icon when highlighting archived items in the Dads folder & the pop-up menu only gave me the option 'This is not spam', so in other words Norton still thinks stuff in the Dads folder spam.  Likewise, if I put an email in the AntiSpam folder & select the Norton icon, I only get the option 'This is spam' - so it ISN'T identifying emails stored in the AntiSpam folder as spam.

I therefore tried Kavitha's alternative solution & this appears to have worked - correct auto rules created & I get the correct options when clicking the Norton icon. In order to keep the emails that were in the Dads folder I moved them to a new folder then later changed the name of the folder back to Dads.

Worth mentioning that my wide had the same problem on the same computer. I applied the same solution but forgot to delete the original auto-rule (which was inactive) & the solution didn't work - Norton again selected an existing folder, seemingly at random. Even deleting it & disabling & re-enabling Norton didn't work, so I had to start all over by deleting everything & then it worked. Clearly it is important to delete even seemingly inactive items & follow the solution to the letter!

Thanks.
