I get a suspicious-looking message purporting to be from Norton (bottom right). It appears (and gets ignored for the time being) every day, regardless of the app being used at the time. In my experience, an update is activated when my PC is switched on, but this one insists on a hot restart. Is this a genuine message from Norton? If so, why is a hot restart needed?
Problem is solved.
Norton Private Browser running in the background was preventing LiveUpdate from running. I uninstalled Norton Private Browser and the message hasn't returned since.
I still don't understand why Windows Task Manager didn't close Norton Private Browser, but I am happy that the problem has gone away.
Many thanks for all suggestions received
Latest update required a restart, for me at least.
Many thanks for the recommendations. I am working through them.
There was an update outstanding. I tried a LiveUpdate that couldn't be completed because Norton Private Browser was running. I closed that browser screen, but the message kept coming back. I tried to close all instances of Norton Private browser using Windows Task Manager, without success. According to the message on LiveUpdate, the update would run next time I started the PC. The troublesome message returned on the next startup. My next step will be to uninstall Norton Private Browser altogether and try running LiveUpdate again.
If that doesn't work, I'll try some of the other proposed solutions.
It DOES look genuine, but my wife's computer is on the same subscription and she hasn't had the message and I don't recall ever seeing such a thing in the years I have subscribed: just naturally suspicious, I guess.
looks like a legit real message to me ( from the appearance)
i would run the update and see if you have a patch or something thats not been applied yet ( apply now on patch)
i would also run the auto fix , in classic mode top right click help
on left click get support and let that run
after a build/patch its recommended to restart for it to be applied completely ( finish install)
had nothing to do with fast start up
I can't tell if its real or not from a distance. I have a habit of not clicking on any pop-ups.
Go to norton360. do a live update and manually restart your pc. You still have the pop-up? if your Norton does not have version 22.24.2.6, you might need a update.
Update your programs with Norton Software Updater

Some drivers may require a system restart to complete the update. If prompted to restart your computer, click Restart.

are you using Software Updater / Driver Updater?
maybe, you received product update and had not restarted machine in awhile?
Be sure you are using the Restart command. Not Shut down and startup again if you have Windows Fast Startup feature enabled. If you use Windows 8/8.1, 10 or 11, there can be an issue with the Windows Fast Startup feature.. See more information here.
