I saw this in my Windows services listing. What is this? It also showed not running. Is that right? My NAV2008 seems to be onn and active. Do I need to chnage this pservice status to running?
I checked my services status and notice too that this service is not running and set to Manuel
You may want to hang on for one of the Norton Staff -- names in red -- on this but if it is really a remnant of an old installation then you could run the Norton Removal Tool which is intended to clean up debris:
This link: Symantec Norton Removal Tool. will direct you to the current Symantec Norton Removal Tool.
However do note that this tool removes all Norton applications it may find not just the one you want to remove so don't use it if you have other Norton applications, even ones like GHOST or Save & Restore.
It would help to know if something who used the NRT still has this file on his or her system.
Mijcar You mean did I use Norton Removal Tool in the past? I think my wife did to delete the NIS2008 trial we had before getting NAV2008.
So does this service Symantec Core LC service appear to not be anything that needs to be on to maintain security?
Not quite, notech. The question is really directed to others, since your problem got solved.
What I want to know is if running NRT removes the Symantec Core LC service or not. It didn't seem to in your case; but we don't know for sure because of the steps you took. There is a lot of assuming going on here about what the NRT does and how affective it is. I am starting to conclude that it is less effective than previous removal tools; and that the best uninstall of AV2009 and NIS2009 is through its own uninstall program.
That is also the method Symantec itself recommends, despite all the suggestions to the contrary here.
mijcar- No offense but my problem isn't solved. My question still remains
should Symantec Core LC service show as running in my windows services log? It currently is not running and shown as manual
Maybe on Monday someone from Norton can address this for you. They are always very good about answering. Myguess is that if you NAV2008 scurity panel shows everything in green, then things are ok even without this service running. Thats just my guess. I have checked my services log in my Windows Vista task manager and mine also shows Symantec Core LC as not currently running
No offense, notech. But understand I wasn’t trying to solve the problem. I was trying to collect data on the topic from other users.
I do not have that serivce and zi am running NIS 2009 and never had NIS 2008. If it is set to manual and not running then leave it be. Its a stray entry. You can set it to disbale but its not a big deal. Download and install AnVir Task Manager and you will get a better look at whats running on your pc.

I checked this further and noted the exe
symlcsvc.exe
I googled and some say its part of removing old Norton products ( I had a trial of NIS 2008 last year)
Not worried if it is legit, Iknow it is. Just wondering if the status should be running? Right now it is not running. Is it an item that is only used some of the time?
If it is not currently running, does it effect my NAV2008 in an unsecure way?
