I've been using NIS 2009 (current version 16.7.2.11) with Norton Add-on Pack 3.7.0.23 for some time without any problems. Today, I switched on the computer and left it for a few hours (connected to the internet) and when I returned there was a message on the screen saying: "Symantec Server Framework has encountered an error and must close". When I clicked "OK", the NIS icon immediately disappeared from the system tray, so I simply restarted the computer and everything was ok again.
However, as this is the first time I've had this message under these circumstances (I've not left the computer for such a long time after switching it on before), I wondered if anybody has any idea what might have caused it? I notice from some other threads that others have also had this message under similar circumstances (i.e. after prolonged periods of computer inactivity), so I would think it's unlikely to be an issue caused by specific combinations of hardware or software (other than standard software supplied by Microsoft or NIS when you install their primary products). Unfortunately, I've not seen any resolution to it yet.
In these threads, there have been various suggestions about running other scanning programs (such as MalwareBytes and SAS), but all to no avail. I don't want to go through all the same hassle installing and running other products just trying various operations "in case it works", but simply want to know if anyone actually knows how to resolve this issue. Do Symantec know about it; is there a hotfix; etc? I wonder if upgrading to NIS 2010 would help - has anyone who knows about this problem with NIS 2009 actually upgraded to NIS 2010 and found out whether or not it still exists?
I am in the UK running Windows XP SP3 Home Edition (32-bit) on a 7-year old Evesham tower pc (i.e. not a laptop), with an AMD Athlon XP2400+ (2GHz) processor and 1GB RAM, and with no other security or antivirus/anti-spyware software running - I only run NIS 2009. My browser is IE8 (version 8.0.6001.18702). My ISP is TalkTalk (a Carphone Warehouse subsidiary) and I connect to the internet via a Huawei EchoLife HG520b wired router. In all other respects, I have no problems connecting to or browsing the internet, and NIS 2009 works fine for me in all other respects too.
If anyone actually knows the answer, I'd be very grateful - thank you.
