Hi, im having little trouble with Symantec Hash Provider, one of the services from NIS 2011
My PC performance monitoring software detected that it appears to be somehow not working properly, and im not sure is it a serious problem and does it need any involvement from my side. Only thing i believe could be a source of a problem, was I recently restored my PC using system image backup, but i reinstalled norton after doing that anyway. I attach the screenshot below.
od the driver tab, theres nothing besides "Start" button, which should start the process, but when clicked the error message appears with same content as shown above, and a box that allows to change the autorun mode of that service (boot, system, on demand etc)
NIS 2011 control panel does not seem to report any problems
Welcoem to the Norton Community. When did you install NIS 2011 and was the problem there from the beginning or did it occur sometime later? What security software did you have before NIS 2011? Do you have any other security software installed besides NIS? What is the exact version from Support > About?
After installing NIS 2011 did you run live update and reboot as requested and do a final run of live update to ensure that all updates were retrieved?
Does NIS report everything secure on the main window or does it show problems? You can try clicking on Support > Get Support and walk through the wizard and see if NIS reports any problems.
I Installed NIS 2011 right after it was released, but, as i said before, i recently backed up my PC to the state from about 2 months, which was before NIS 2011 was released. Because of that backup contained NIS 2010, my previous av. After i backed it up to the previous state i removed old NIS 2010 and installed NIS 2011.
I dont have any other security software installed
Version is 18.1.0.37
Yes, i did run live update. Problem started appearing about a week ago (after i backed up to previous state), from that time, i rebooted my pc several times. Error messages are up to date meaning they are appearing at this very moment
I did try to click on the Get 1 click support. What happens is, it seems to detect some problems, because after the scan is done, it tells me to restart the computer. The thing is, it doesnt help. I tried to repeat that scanning process like 3 times, and always at the end it tells me to reboot, but it doesnt help at all. The error message still appears.
Physically disconnect your self from the internet. That could include yanking out the ethernet cable/telephone cable from the back of your computer/turning off your wireless with either the wireless switch on your computer or turning off your router. This is to prevent any cyber attacks while you are vulnerable. DO NOT RECONNECT UNTIL MENTIONED!
Back up any identity safe data:
Uninstall the Norton software through the add/remove programs and let your computer reboot.
Upon reboot, run the Norton Removal tool installed earlier. Upon completion, let your computer to reboot or reboot manually (not quite sure why on Windows 7 the NRT doesn't prompt a reboot).
Repeat step 4 two more times just to be sure.
Run the Norton Internet Security 2011 installation file downloaded in step 1. If you are using Windows Vista and above, right click the installation file and select run as adminstrator (as shown in the screenshot below).
Upon the completion of the installation, reconnect your internet. Then run liveupdate repeatedly until all upgrades are complete. You may delete the files you downloaded in step 1.
Ericsson, Symantec Hash Provider is no longer a separate component in the 2011 products. System Restore is a very poor utility for recovering systems and probably restored your 2010 product incorrectly thereby preventing a proper uninstall leaving this remnant. The 'best' way to fix this is probably to uninstall your current 2011 product, reinstall the 2010 version, uninstall the 2010 version and then reinstall the 2011 version. Alternatively you probably could uninstall the 2011 product, run SymNRT and then reinstall the 2011 version and be in good shape. Note that running SymNRT removes any other Norton products that you may also have installed.
Thank you reese_anschultz, your solution solved my problem. I removed NIS 2011, runned NRT, reinstalled norton and warning dissapeared, just as you said :)
thanks to everybody who also replied in this topic
