Symantec issues unauthorized google.com SSL certificate

As users of Norton Internet Security, my family relies on Symantec to evaluate the validity of SSL signing certificates to maintain our computer security. This is a topic which is important enough to Symantec/Norton that it was recently featured in your protection blog:

Yesterday, Symantec posted a very different blog, indicating a problem internally with Symantec employees' handling of CA certificates. The problem was serious enough to result in the termination of multiple employees:

I can find nothing about this on the Norton forums. Don't you think this lapse significant enough to say something to your customers about it? The problem existed until Google notified Symantec:

Can my family continue to rely on Symantec for our internet security? Or will unauthorized SSL certificates issued by Symantec (and presumably not found objectionable by Symantec products) pose a risk to us until they are discovered by 3rd parties? As paying customers, we would like to hear more about Norton/Symantec's plan to deal with this in the future.

Thanks,

Bruce
