Symantec Service Framework not responding NIS 2012

We have an Acer Aspire One D255E running Windows 7 Starter with Service Pack 1.

 

We installed NIS 2012 in January 2012 but since then my 10 year old nephew has been using it. When checking other software I noticed that NIS wasn't working and when I double clicked the desktop icon it would not open.

 

Over the last couple of days I tried several things, several times to get NIS working without success, here's what I've tried so far:

 

1. Run Microsoft Fix it

2. Run Norton Power Eraser

3. Run Norton RnR to remove and reinstall the latest version (19.7.1.5)

4. Run Live Update to get latest updates

 

When I first ran NRnR the software opened successfully and I was able to run Live Update and do a full system scan to protect the Netbook. However, when the notebook is restarted or shut down and started again the icon is unresponsive. The desktop gadget disappears and the icon in the bottom right-hand corner also disappears.

 

At some time during all of this I also got an Error 8504,104 message but was unable to have it fixed automatically.

 

Can anyone suggest anything?
