SymDaemon frying my CPU

While reading some online materials, I found that the cooling fan on my Macbook Pro was on high speed.  Checked the temperatures and the CPU was at 212F!  After putting it outside to cool, brought it back up and just watched the temperature begin climbing again.  Forced a shutdown and it has subsided...for now.  SymDaemon was showing almost an hour with 8 threads-virtually dominating the entire activity.  I saw some reports of this sort of thing in 2013, thought it was fixed.

Have turned off idle scan, which may have "fixed" the problem, but would like to know if there is an ongoing issue here why it has persisted for so long?  Am running OS X 10.10.2.  Is there something I can do to prevent a core meltdown in the future?  I'm afraid to leave this machine running unattended.
