Using Norton Removal Tool is actually not a "clean uninstall" as there are still many files, registry entries left inside the computer after uninstallation. Your Norton Save and Restore 2.0 will be remove together with all other norton products. You can backup the file to another hard disk , CD or DVD before carry out the process. If you want the clean installation of NIS 2009, I suggest that you reformat the hard disk or restore your computer to the preinstalled factory setting. Only this, all the files installed by NAV 2008 can be removed TOTALLY from your computer.
I was planning on removing NAV2008 prior to installing NIS 2009. I believe in "clean uninstalls" so I was going to run the Norton Removal tool prior to installing NIS 2009. My question is - Will SymNRT have adverse effects on on my Norton "Save and Restore 2.0" installation?
Thanks,
Win XP Pro SP3

Thanks for your reply. Had it been obvious that "running Norton Removal Tool will uninstall all Norton products including NSR", I would not have posted the question.

Thanks for the reply. I did not know SymNRT leaves files behind. What is its purpose then? Just to rescue failed windows uninstalls?
Reformat would be a last resort as the amount of software and subsequent updates for this machine makes this an 8 hour ordeal.
There are many purpose of "left files" in the machine after uninstallation.
1. This is mainly for the protection of Symantec Products. For example, you are using a 15days trialware NIS2009. After 15 days, you won't be able to use it even though you have use the NRT to remove the product and reinstall it again. Some files are saved deeply and hidden in the machine to let the products know that the trial period has been expired.
2. Your product key will be saved automatic in one of the "left files" . The next time you install the product, they will not asking for the product key.
3. To save some settings for the products such as Identity Safe (Cards& Log-ins)
You can have a look at your windows registry after you uninstall the NAV2008. In the search box, type "Symantec" or "Norton". You will notice there are a lot of files left inside the windows registry as well as the Windows and Program Files folder.

I understand there may be some purpose for leaving some files behind after an un-install. But this is my computer after all and if I want a program removed, I should be able to do so completely without reformatting. If I knew what was being left behind and what its purpose was and that it would have no ill effects on future security software installations, that would be different. But my understanding is that random "garbage" files are also left behind that serve no purpose and can conflict with future security software packages.
I guess my original question had to do with the best way to cleanly uninstall NAV2008 without disturbing Norton Save and Restore short of reformatting the HD. Maybe I can get away with just a windows uninstall of NAV 2008 then installing NIS2009. Or maybe I can use SymNRT and just blow away Save and Restore then re-install it after installing NIS 2009. I was just looking for the best way to proceed.
Thanks.
Oldshep,
Thank you for the question and we really appreciate your continued use of Norton products.
If you want to uninstall NAV 2008, I would recommend that you:
1) Run Windows uninstall for NAV 2008 from the Control Panel
2) Reboot when prompted
3) Run the install for NIS 2009
However, I would recommend letting NIS 2009 upgrade NAV 2008. The upgrade will automatically uninstall NAV 2008. The upgrade has been thoroughly tested and is safe to use. In order to do this, here is what you will need to do:
1) Start the install for NIS 2009
2) Once you accept the End User License Agreement NAV 2008 uninstall would be silently launched
3) Reboot when prompted
4) NIS 2009 install will continue after the reboot
Thanks.
Regards.
avanip,
Thanks for your response. I will proceed by "letting NIS 2009 upgrade NAV 2008" without uninstalling.

It’s obvious that running Norton Removal Tool will uninstall all Norton products including NSR. So you can uninstall nav2008 and install nis 2009, NSR is still in your pc,or run the NRT, and install NSR again, but I’m not sure whether the backup jobs are still remaining in your pc after you run the NRT
