I bought a new laptop few days ago and I found a preinstalled Norton internet Security.
Today I uninstall it but I notice that Symsilent (c:\prog (x86)\Symsilent) is not deleted. So I try to run Norton Removal Tool without any results.
Furthermore I'm sure that is a Symantec file because Symsilent has also a digital signature (sha1 - Symantec Corporation) and as well as I said, the notebook is new.
You can either locate all Symsilent files in Windows Search and manually delete them, also check in Services if there are any leftovers and delete the service(s).
Check also in msconfig if there are any startup items and uncheck them. (it can also be done by deleting the entries via your Registry Editor).
Additionally,IF you are familiar with the registry, locate all the relevant entries and manually delete them.
REBOOT.
Other altenative is to call Symantec Support, and they can remotely connect to your pc and do this for you.
Revo Uninstaller has the advantage of listing what it is going to take out so you can see if it does remove Symsilent if it's not removed by the normal Norton uninstall module that Windows uses and which is the first stage of Revo's cleanup.
I've never mastered any attempt to get it to do anything after a normal uninstall which I presume removes what it looks for to list the program as installed so you may have to reinstall Norton but I see this is a feature of the Pro version which you can get on a free 30 day trial .......
If I were buying anything these days I'd certainly get the Pro version since I find the Free version very good.
