System restore

i am going to restore my computer to factory setting

will my norton still cover me?

It is possible for a system restore to upset security programs since it can end up with a mix of old and new files under the protection of the security program although the data the security program holds is not changed to match.

I don't know if Norton will signal that something is wrong so see what others suggest.

Can you say why you plan to do a system restore? If it's to deal with an infection or malware it may not be the best way and again other users could help.

I only ask cause a friend of mine had problems after a system restore. Fortunately, I don't have the need for one myself at this time. Thank you for your reply.

As long as I'm asking questions, I have one about Norton updates. I have a 2008 norton antivirus. Are there any specific things that should be done before updating to the newest version? Would it update to 2012, and what are the differences? Thank you again

In my experience, and I have used system restore on several occasions (on XP SP3, and  I always do it in safe mode), the only effect on NAV has been that it reverted to its status at the time of the restore point, except that the days remaining of the subscription are consistent with the current date and do not revert to the prior date of the restore point. So, as happened to me once when a couple of days after renewing my subscription I had to restore to a time prior to that, NAV indicated that the subscription (i.e. the old one) had expired. This was not difficult to correct, however. Other than that it might then indicate that it needs to be updated, but otherwise works normally.

Unfortunately I have to disagree. I have seen all too many times on the forum where the use of system restore causes problems with Norton - anything from a minor glitch which can sometimes be fixed by running live update and/or Support > Get Support.

But many other times it causes Norton to have major problems forcing an uninstall / reinstall to resolve.

Some but not all files used by Norton are backed up in a system restore point. When a system restore is done, some Norton files are restored but not all of them which causes problems.

In general the longer it has been between the creation of the system restore and actually using it to restore the system, the higher the possibility of it causing problems.

Further, in order for system restore to work one must turn OFF Tamper Protection in General Settings. SAFE mode might get around this.

Doing periodic image backups is much more foolproof and guarantees success.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Hi dragonlady,

Are you still on Windows XP? Did you ever complete your SP 3 update on XP? The last thing from you in February showed that you had yet to do this udpate.

Because NAV 2008 is now 4 years out of date I would recommend the use of the Norton Removal Tool. Please proceed as follows:

Before you use the removal tool, please download the full version of NAV 2012 from here. Please note that this is the English version so please let me know if you need a different language and I will provide the appropriate link.

Once you have downloaded NAV, you can proceed with use of the removal tool as indicated below.

Please NOTE that this removes ALL Symantec products so be sure to have your license keys ready as you will need to reinstall all your Symantec software products. You can get your Norton product key from your Norton Account.

Once done please download the Norton Removal Tool from Symantec from this link.

For your protection, disconnect from the Internet before continuing.

Do a conventional uninstall of NAV via the Control Panel and then restart your computer.

Run the Norton Removal Tool and once it is completed, please reboot your computer. Once up please run the Removal Tool one more time and once again reboot.

Then please install NAV 2012 from the full version downloaded earlier. Once installed please reconnect back to the Internet and run Live Update repeatedly (rebooting as requested) until it reports there are no more updates.

Hope this helps and please let us know how it goes.

Best wishes.

Allen

dragonlady,

Congratulations on asking first! So often we get "I did this and now .... what can I do?"

As you can see you have plenty of informed help and I'd certainly agree with the recommendation to update from 2008 and how to do it.
