I'm actually running Windows XP - Home Edition and I purchased the Norton 360
Hello, seems that I have tried everything, Googled for help and nothing I can't get rid of this I even tried EVERYTHING what in this Symantec Forum Thread has ~> http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/how-remove-recycler-system-volume-information-folder-my-hard-drive but didn't work the Folders are still there.
And everywhere I enter says that is a Virus or Trojan stealing my information, that it spreads via USB; and actually I remember that a relative from my family bring me a USB to print him some stuff, he told me that maybe his USB could be Infected, so i told him don't worry I have the best Antivirus if theres a virus in your USB my Norton 360 will detect it and kill it, so I plugged in the USB and as predicted there was viruses that the Norton 360 caught i didn't take importance to the Threath names becasue I assumed that was irrelevant check them since the Norton 360 already caught them, so I proceed with this task from my relative, everything okay, and didn't notice anything wrong in my computer just some lag, delays, my computer started slowling down a bit, but still normal, since I attempt to check some stuff in my Additional Driver of 1TB where I store my Music, Pictures, Videos and Stuff ..and found with this folders.
I ran a Full Scan like more than 10 times and didn't find anything I even Scan my Computer in Safe Mode and still nothing.
I even use the Power Eareser that Symantec provides and nothing!
There are the folders every time i try to delete them I can't delete them, even I tried the "Unlocker" to help me delete them and yeah I could deleted them and send them to the "Recycle Bin" but then I checked them in my Recycle Bin to see what do they have and there was a lot of inormation or tools, programs that seemed that my computer needed even Symantec Stuff with Norton Icons, so i got afraid to delete them permanently and restored them back.
So please any help will be very appreaciated since I have fighting with this like 1 week and I'm kind of exahusted and frustared, If you guys need additional information about this matter I will let it know quickly. Thanks in advance.
Hi eomar500,
Hi the System Volume Information is the folder that System Restore in Windows use to take a copy of your computers programs. So when you run a restore to earlier data the programs are restore. You cannot delete the folder because Windows has the folder locked. I would suggest you not to use the option to delete the folder.
Can you let me know the Operating system you use so that i can provide a possible step to fix the problem.
Windows XP - Hope Edition - 64 bits
Hi Eomar500,
To disable System volume Information from coming up. there are two possible steps.
Step 1: Click on Start and right click on My Computer -> Click on Properties -> Click on the Tab that says System Restore and disable the System restore.
Step 2: Click on Start and right click on My Computer -> Click on Properties -> Click on the Tab that says System Restore and you can disable the specific drive that you want to remove the drive from being used.
Please let us know what happened
Ok I did that but didn't remove the Folders.
What I'm trying to mean is that what could happen to those folders appear?
I have made a research and everybody says that is a virus but they dont provide info. in how to remove it.
This gets me mad because how does my Norton didn't caught it, then why I'm paying around 60 bucks the year?

Not sure this has anything to do with your situation, but as far as I know, Norton 360 is not compatable with XP 64 bit.

Hi Eomar500,
The folder is not a virus and it's actually a part of System Restore; the tool that allows you to set points in time to roll back your computer. The System Volume Information folder is where XP stores these points and associated information that makes them accessible.
In Windows XP, restore point files are stored in a hidden folder named System Volume Information on the root of every drive, partition or volume, including most external drives, and some USB flash drives. On drives or partitions that are not monitored by System Restore this folder will be very small in size or completely empty, unless Encrypting File System is in use or the Indexing Service is turned on.
Note: If the System Volume Information folder is deleted, it will be recreated automatically.
What a shame I'm very sorry, I wrote Hope instead of Home.
Ok I checked back and this are the details:
Windows XP - SP3 - Home Edition - 32 bit
Just adding my 2 cents, in case eomar500 is not running XP 64 bits and is in fat running 32 bit and N 360 is functioning properly.
They stated they ran numerous full system scans and the virus (if it is in the System Volume Information Folder) will not be detected, because the SVIF is excluded from Scans by default ( Settings > Antivirus > Scans & Risks Tab > Exclusions/LowRisks > Itmes to Exclude from Scans. Clicking on Configure will display System Volume Information as a default exclusion.
Without going into a long winded explanation, a virus in a Restore Point contained in the SVI can not infect your system. Even if you restore to an infected system restore point, the file will be scanned at that point in time and the virus will be detected prior to it being restored to your system.
Ok it's not a virus or something but what could happen to make it appear suddenly?
any possible situations in what does could happen to something could turn them on?
Also thought that it was the Back Up that the Norton 360 provides and I turned it Off but the folders were still there.
also there some folders and programs with wierd icons in my Local Disk
I mean I dont know them because I know exactly what do I have installed on my PC
they also appeared at same time with the System Volume Information and Recycler folders
also another symphtom or detail is that in my Folder where I store ALL my music started being full also from its artwork
from each artist and the picture icon was kind of 'idle' liek the 'SVI' and the 'Recycler' Folders, seem that they have something to do.
Hi Eomar500,
The reason why these files showed up suddenly is that the Dont show hidden files and folder were disabled. it is the reason why it shows up. To remove them from showing up again try the steps below.
Open My Computer Click on Tools -> Folder Options -> Click on the View tab -> click Dont show Hidden Files and Folder option.
It seems that the Music folder seems to be a hidden file. So put it back to normal. Before doing the above mentioned step Right click on the Music folder -> Click on Properties -> Uncheck the option that says Hidden. Then please follow the steps mentioned above.
Please let us know if these steps worked
Okay, according to my Norton Pals and my Experience I have conclude that...
The 'System Volume Information' and 'Recycler' folders are not threats to your system
they just show up when someone (user) or something (program) changes your 'Folders Option'
Here is the solution to hide them back:
- Click Start, and then click My Computer.
- On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
- On the View tab, click Show hidden files and folders.
- Mark the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) check box. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the change.
- Click Apply to All Folders
- Click OK.
Hey didn't realize that you already posted the solution
I found the solution on Google too, thanks a lot, keep up the Good Work!
