I had a trial version of Norton Anti Virus and really liked the program, when it expired I went to the store and grabbed a one year subscription. So I followed the instructions that were recommended which was to install the product on line rather than from the cd. I went through the process, entered my product key, signed into my account and then got a message saying my trial version had expired and that I had to renew my subsciption. I tried a couple more times but not being completely familiar with computers I clicked on the help tab and was given the number to call for support. The person on the phone said that i should get remote assistance to see why it wasn't installing and directed me to a web site called Support Me. He waited on the phone with me until i had a firm connection with the remote tech and gave him permisson to examine my computer. He looked through my system and then told me my computer was corrupted and had so many registry errors caused by viruses and spyware that it was imperative that he fixed them and that they were what was keeping me from installing the program. Anyway, he wanted to charge me 168 dollars to fix it and then he would install the software and I said i didnt have a credit card, then he asked if I could go get a prepaid card or pay online with my debit card. i still said no and then he got insistant, saying my computer would be ruined. I said i couldnt afford it but would have to wait then and take it in to be looked at when I could afford it and thanked him. He then said he would contact his supervisor and try to get the cost down, at this point i just disconnected because he was so insistant. Now I was really worried and so i shut the computer down and figured it was toast. My friend came over and said lets turn it on and he would see if he could try to fix it. It booted up fine, all the programs worked and then he decided to try to install the Noron Anti Virus but from the supplied cd. It installed no problem, registered the key, downloaded the updates and scanned the computer and it was virus free. He then checked my computer out for registry errors with another program and the system was fine. I tried to find a way to contact Norton directly but there is no email or complaint department. I understand that there are these types of third party remote tech help but Norton really should know that their go to remote support is a bunch of scammers. When this subscription is up I will be switching to a company with better support.
