Firstly I apologise if this is not the right place to ask this question. I know that the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) is Microsoft’s methodology for automatic updating but I don’t believe that the files should accumulate in the Temp folder as they do on my system. My Norton Internet Security 2008 reports my system as clean but is it? any ideas? If I turn off BITS (Control Panel>Performance & Maintenance>Admin. Tools> Services>Background Intelligent Transfer Service>stop) then I do not get any more BITS.tmp files loading but neither does my microsoft automatic updates (nor some other microsoft applications) work with BITS off.

Thank you for your reply Stu. I haven't tried an online scan from another vendor as yet. I thought I would see if anyone has had the same prob. and knows a quick fix! (always hopeful). I am minded to run the trial version of NortonBot (I think that is what it is called) but I only have a dialup connection and at 11-12MB that will take sometime to download - but I may give it a go. Thanks for your help and any further thoughts will be gratefully received.

Best regards,
