I recently ran Norton Utilities version 16.02.53 to clean and compact the registry. A short time later after the utilities finished, I began to have trouble accessing my bookmarks on my Chrome browser. My mouse would choose a bookmark and then clear the bookmark without me being able to choose a website. I also began to have problems with Microsoft Word. I was not able to enter text into a document. The cursor would hesitate and then dump several characters at once. To correct the issue, I ran Windows System Recovery and returned the operating system to a previous state. The problems disappeared. I ran Norton Utilities registry clean again and the problems returned. I then checked the Windows Reliability History and found that the “Dell Touch Pad Synaptics Pointing Device Driver”, version 19.4.3.38, loaded from Windows update on June 1, 2017, listed over 40 error conditions and failures (on the Reliability History). I ran Windows Recovery again and then uninstalled the Synaptics driver which is present on the Windows Software Programs listing of the Control Panel menu. I then ran Norton Utilities registry clean and compact and had no problems this time. The Windows online update feature reloaded the same Synaptics driver about a week later, but there have been no problems from it being loaded AFTER the Norton Utilities were run to clean and compact the registry. This is the only problem I have had with Norton Utilities and have had the software on this Dell Inspiron 15 for over three and a half years.
