Those empty WAL - files on C: drive

This has been asked before, but when I quickly checked I didn’t find an answer that clears this up.

So, on Windows 11, Norton creates .WAL - files on C: directory. Those are 0 bytes long.

What are they? Is it safe to delete them? Why it generates them? I have not noticed it before, so is it a bug or a feature.

Thank you.

Norton v22 or v24?

Did you try refreshing/reinstalling your Norton?
Do you run Norton SmartScan?
Norton’s component “nuPerfScan.exe” seems to be creating those files.
try renaming nuPerfScan.exe … for example: nuPerfScan.exe123

Please post progress

OK, I will try that. Thank you. :slightly_smiling_face:

Sorry…my WAL files 0 bytes content from old Community is Oops!

It seems I am unable to rename nuperfscan.exe , it won’t let me do that even when I login as admin and disable real time protection etc.

But it is ok, I suppose they will fix this eventually, until that I will just delete those files, don’t suppose there’s harm in that.

my bad… I neglected to mention Product Tamper Protection = temporary turn off

OK, works now. I ran a smart scan and didn’t get any new WAL files.

Thank you

First access with this community. [date=2024-09-29 time=05:45:00 timezone=“Europe/Brussels”]I see two files with “same” name but with 2 cases difference. Viewable in Paramètres of Windows 10.x.y.z : one with Icon Norton and the other with icon who seem’s to be a Windows icon ( nuPerfScan.exe AND nuperfscan.exe ). The “same” name of file is a little bit a problem of viruse or not ???

Hello @Marc_Absil
are you finding … nuPerfScan.exe and nuperfscan.exe?
as I recall…with my N360 v22 = nuPerfScan.exe
for example: https://processchecker.com/file/nuPerfScan.exe.html

and for reference: related “empty wal files” pics [here]

Note: with my N360 v24. I’m not finding nuPerfScan.exe

N360 v24.9

It looks as if it has been fixed so far. If I see them again I will let you know.

Respectfully,

I’m still seeing these files being generated on my C drive as of December 1st. I’m on version 22.24.8.36.
