I received a troubling email that threatens blackmail. Either I send them $2000 in bitcoin or else they will make public everything they ‘hacked’ from my computer.
It says they have compromising viewings and has my face on it. In fact I have not watched any porn movies.
Do they write everyone with bogus “evidence”?
I recieved ± the same E-Mail, slightly cheaper, only wants $1,300 - I notified our consumer watchdog, reported the attempted blackmail to the police and assume that it’s just fake - as my webcam is off (by that I mean a) disconnected and b) facing the wall) most of the time. I changed my E-Mail password though and let Norton run a full scan, better safe than sorry. Google what you should do with the comsumer watchdog in your country. What I would like to know from the community (or someone at Norton): if Norton is turned on, is it possible to bootleg a video that I either stream online or have on my harddisk or to "While browsing these sites, your device’s camera automatically turns on.
Video-record you and what you watch is being save.
After that, the video clip is automatically saved on our server."despite Norton running and not reporting a problem?
Yeah, I reported to Lifelock.
Thank you for the tips.
Anything come it it?
All of this is just a scam.
These emails are threatening and sound like real but it is best to just delete it and do not respond in any way.
Norton can help prevent malware from entering your environment and only allow good programs to access your webcam but it is not 100% foolproof.
You have provided the first line of defense against this type of attack by recognizing the threat yourself and taking some precautions and that is better than any piece of software that is guarding your device.
From the National Cyber Security Centre… NCSC.
Thank you!
Will this work for us in the Colonies (e.g. US)?
