Told to forego IE9+ and try Chrome but, keep getting message popup "wait"

OK, not a techy anymore (since retirement) but Chrome keeps error message "unresponsive, wait?" ANNOYING

 

IE9, VISTA ON  Toshiba laptop (without battery!)
