Tracking Cookies Scan

I had NIS 2009 installed today by my computer tech.  So far, everything is running smoothly.

One of the options for Tracking Cookies Scan is:  Remove - Automatically removes tracking cookies.

My dumb question:  With this option, when does it remove the tracking cookies?  After doing Quick Scan (Full Scan) or while I'm on the internet, removing the tracking cookies as I go along to the various sites?

Thank you.

Automatically when they are found

Hi, Stu,

Good to see you're still with us!

Anyway, this is in-correct; they are only Detected from a Manual Scan, whether it'd be a Quick Scan or Full System Scan.

Hi -

Just to be clear, he wanted to know about the *removal* - not just the detection.

My Reply includes Detection and Removal.  ;)

Thank you Floating_Red, Stu, and Compumind for responding to my question.

Since the tracking cookies are removed only after the quick or full manual scans, I'll ljust leave on the option - "ask me".

Is that correct?  I am having cookies deleted during automatic background scans.

Hi dforrest,

You have three options for tracking cookies in NIS 2009.

Open the main Norton Interface. Click on Computer Settings. Look for the entry labeled "Tracking Cookies Scan".

There you have the option to "Remove" / "Ignore" / "Ask Me".  Set this to your preference and then click Apply and OK.

Are you sure?  It's odd if it is happening, even if it is Set to Remove, with Automatic Background Scans.

Mine does as well Floating Red.  Before the latest version I could click on the cookie in resolved threats and it gave me a list of all the cookies it removed.  Now it doesn’t.  Not that it’s an issue.  It cleared some cookies last night during idle time full system scan.

@ Phil_D

I once set my tracking cookies to REMOVE and then had problems staying logged on to this site. Is "ask me" the safest setting for the average user?

I also use Tools> "clear private data">check cookies> delete before I close Firefox after surfing the net.

I empty the cookies out of IE7 control panel>internet options>General Tab>chose delete>Then delete cookies >pop up click on yes then ok my way out. That way I leave no cookies for Norton!! And if I forget NIS2009 picks them up.FWIW

That's unusual. The cookies are only detected / removed during a scan, either quick of full. They are not processed "on the fly", so that should not have caused a problem with you staying logged on. It may have been a coincidence with something else - intermittent connection, etc.

"Ask me" is the default setting for Tracking Cookie Scan.

Hmmm ok It may have been when this site was being tweaked/adjusted as that is when most of the problems I have encountered have occured. Thanks for your answer,I have just set it to remove now so will see what happens.

Yes.

For example, I see an entry in the log as follows (this was when my computer came out of sleep mode this morning):

"Tracking Cookie detected by Virus scanner"   "Removed"

There are several entries like this.
