Transferring data from my old computer to a new computer

Hi, I'm about to get a new computer with Windows 8 from Windows 7.

Is there any issues tranferring my subscripton?

Can I use the back up to transfer my files to the new computer

There's no problem with transferring the subscription. Are you going to continue to use the old PC or are you disposing of it? If you are keeping it in use then do you have a multiple PC licence? If you are disposing of it then you should deactivate the subscription before you do so. Details when we know from you.

Microsoft has a utility called Windows Easy Transfer that I have used and which works in Windows 8.0 but they changed things in WIndows 8.1.

It will transfer personal data fles and some settings (and can be cinfigured by you to change what it moves) but it cannot move applications which you need to reinstall and so you need the installation media or files to do this.

I can give you more details if you can say if the new computer arrives with Windows 8.0 the original release as some still do or with Windows 8.1 preinstalled as hopefully yours will since that will help you later on if you ever have to do a Restore to Factory condition after some major breakdown or disk failure.

If you are not sure can you give me the make and exact model computer you are getting and I'll try and look it up -- I'm used teo doing this!

Hi Hugh,

My new computer has Windows 8.1 64 bit. I can see my old computer on my file explorer so I presume I can bring files across that way  or I have an external hard drive as another option.

How much does it cost to buy an extra licence?

Guy

Yes you can certainly drag and drop or you could use the Windows Easy Transfer Utility. I don't use N360 myself so I'm not acquainted with the backup but direct from the old computer should be faster if your backups are in the cloud or on disks ....

{Note this Norton maintenance announcement if your backups are on their sysytem:

You ask about cost of an additional licence -- is the licence you have for a 1PC version or a 3 PC version? The only way to check i know of is to look in your Norton Account which will tell you how many activations have been used and how many are available.

If you have a 3PC version (which is the most common in the marketplace) and have not used them all up then you can download and install it automaticaly from your Norton Account by logging onto it from the new computer using your email address and password and you will get the current version already activated and good for the balance of your subscription (they all expire on the same date as the first activation).

But if you need to buy then the best thing is to check local store flyers and the internet but make sure you get from an authorized distributor like Amazon where I see N 360 2014 3PC for $34. If you are in the USA you can use the download version and just use the key without downloading from Amazon (which is safe since they are authorized to get it from the Norton Servers)

One important thing with the new computer before you try to install N360 (or any security program on it) is what security application came preinstalled on it even as a trial? It is important to uninstall that and clean up with a tool that most security programs have on their website.

So we can point you in the right direction if you tell us what you have preinstalled .... if you are not sure give us the make and exact model identification (not the serial number) and we can probably look it up.

OK Hugh,

Thanks for your help I have the 360 for 3 PCs so I'll see how much to get the extra licence then go from there. The PC come with Mcafee but I've always used Norton and I'm comfortable with it.

You don't need an extra licence if you have the 3PC version unless you are already using it on 3 PCs ....

When looking for prices or ordering Norton 360 remember there are two main versions Standard and Premier with different amounts of online storage and using different, noninterchangeable keys so make sure you match what you have and what you buy and then you can extend your licence when it is nearly expired by just using the key -- you don't have to reinstall.

You don't have to match the year either so buy 2013 or 2014 whichever is cheaper and the keys will work but you have to use the latest version to work in Windows 8+ -- if you  have a spare activation then using your Windows 8 computer log onto your Norton Account and download from your account and you get the latest downloadable version already activated .....

And after uninstalling McAfee in the usual way I would download and run the McAfee cleanup tool from their website:

After you download and install the N 360 do run the LiveUpdate several times until it tells you that you are fully uptodate.
