Trick to installing on virtual machines?

I wanted to check out what the latest NAV2009 was like (fresh download of the trial) and was surprised to see that I couldn’t install it in the latest VirtualBox or VirtualPC, both of which I have installed on Vista hosts. The client OS is a fresh and updated install of XP SP3.

When I ran NAV09EN.exe on VirtualBox, it entered memory for about 2 seconds (as seen in TaskMan) and then immediately closed. I never even saw the opening screen of the installer, and no log file was created. On the theory that it’s choking on the installer packaging, is there a way of extracting it and installing that way?

In VPC I had more luck, in that it appeared to actually install, but after rebooting NAV doesn’t actually run.

I’ve used both environments frequently in the past and have never seen these kinds of problems. I even recall testing much older versions of Norton products years ago in virtual environments and never saw this issue.

rseiler,

I don't have much experience with VirtualBox or VPC, but I test NIS/NAV all day with VMWare Workstation and it's never had a problem. Did you copy the installer into the guest O/S, or are you mapping it in from the host?

Have you tried running VPC on another host OS (e.g. Windows Server, XP?) and then installing NAV?

Yes, the nav09en.exe installer is on the guest machine. I have tried two different hosts, Vista and Win7, but I’d be surprised if that could influence the guest in any way. Trying a different guest would have a direct influence, but if it doesn’t work on a clean XP SP3, I don’t know what it would work on.

Good to hear it works in VMWare, but that makes three different results with three different virtual environments. It’ll be interesting to see what results others have seen with my two.

Did you copy the installer to yuor virtual machine or did you download it from within?

Within. I tried downloading it a second time as well.

Update: However, that doesn’t mean both copies were good. Turns out they weren’t. I don’t understand this at all, but IE7 in Vbox twice downloaded the file incorrectly (and the second time wasn’t from the cache, because I saw it actually downloading, and the cache isn’t that large anyway). The bad files were 59,255,768 bytes, and there was no digital signature. So I downloaded FF3 and used it to download the file. It resulted in a file 59,264,920 bytes with a digital signature, and more importantly, it installed.

This is beyond strange.

I have 3 Mac Mini machines running Mac OSX Leopard, fully updated. One runs Parallels, Two run Boot Camp.

I am running Windows XP under the machine with Parallels, and NAV09.EN seems to be running fine on it.

I am running Windows XP under one machine with Boot Camp, and NAV09.EN seems to be running fine on it.

However, on the third machine, I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium under Boot Camp, and it is NOT running well. It installed correctly, opened properly, updated fine, scans fine. But when I reboot, either back into Vista directly, or into Mac, and then back into Vista, NAV09.EN fails. The icon in the Tray no longer exists, and the desktop icon takes forever to do anything and then opens a page telling me I have an Error 8504,4.

I've been fussing with this for a couple of weeks. I've visited with half of India trying to find the solution. One frustrated analys told me NAV09 wouldn't work on Boot Camp or any other emulation software. Finally, after a couple more hours on chat yesterday, one kind soul went through all of the procedures (I had already gone through), did a bit of work in the Registry (that I hadn't done) and got NAV09.EN to reinstall correctly and run again.

It ran until the next reboot into either Vista, or Mac (not that it should run there) and back into Vista. Same problem. It tells me I have Error 8504,4 again today. If I use the Norton Removal Tool and run it twice, then reinstall NAV09.EN, it will run fine until the next reboot. That seems to be my only option.

The only difference between this machine and the other one that works is that I'm running Vista; the others have XP.

Anybody else? Or is my Vista machine screwed up somehow?

robert,

Can you try logging off then back on, without rebooting, on the Vista machine?

Also, what version of NAV are you running -- when it runs you can check the version under Help and Support -> About. You should be using the most recent version which is 16.2.0.7.

Oscar:

I'm using a download of NAV09.EN (instead of the original in the box) version 16.2.0.7.

Same response when logging off the machine and back on. It now fails. No Icon in the tray. Very slow response... actually, NO response to opening the desktop Icon. In fact, the Windows Explorer is not responding at all. Windows is attempting to find a solution to the problem (Which it never does). Logged out and back in again. Same lockup. Some programs open fine. Norton AntiVirus asks for permission (granted) and then just sits several minutes before opening the One Click Support window where it gives me the 8504,4 error again.

Other Observations:

I have noticed that on the MacMini Boot Camp machine with XP running on it, the NAV09 tray icon appears in the tray first, followed by the others. On Vista, it appears last in the list after a fresh install (the only time it does appear).

I live in the boonies, so I have to use a Hughes 2-way satellite system for Internet. But all the other machines that work with NAV are also on the same system and network. On the Vista machine sometimes it's slow to get connected to the Internet. Not sure this would have anything to do with anything, but in case it does...

I installed the box version of NAV in November when I purchased it. It worked. But I rarely boot in Mac on this machine, and didn't notice the problem until a couple of weeks ago. At that time I was running Mac OSX Tiger on the Mac side and Vista on the Windows side under Boot Camp. That's when I first noticed it wasn't working right, and visited with Chat analysts and email analysts to no avail. I've used the new NAV09 download for all installs since then.

Yesterday, I upgraded the OSX side to Leopard (fully updated). Also noticed that my Boot Camp was still an old Beta version. So I installed the Drivers for the Boot Camp release that came with Leopard. (everything installed except for "ATI graphics" which failed for some reason. I don't think the Mac Mini even has an ATI graphics card. Anyway, it went on and installed the rest of the drivers and hasn't complained about that. A lot of the Windows data files were migrated to the Mac Mini from an old XP PC that did have an ATI Graphics card in it, so some old drivers may have come over from there.

And after all of this, NAV09 still gives me an error on re-booting or re-logging in.

The only thing I haven't done, that I can think of, is repairing or reinstalling Vista. Spose that would help?

Thanks. This is driving me nuts.

If you are trying to get NAV09 to run on a Mac Intel machine under Boot Camp on Vista:

Download Norton Removal Tool. Run it.

On Restart, Run it again.

Then install latest version of NAV09

Then: TURN OFF User Account Control in the Vista Control Panels.

When you restart, NAV09 will start normally and run fine after you do a live update to get definitions up to date. And it will continue to run properly after you reboot, log in/out, or shutdown/restart.

If you don't need UAC, or don't want it, this is a solution. If you need UAC for some reason, it's not.
