Wow... thanks a lot for such quick replies! :) I'm going to try them out right now and let you guys know if it worked!
Vejdin - since your method seemed the easiest and the most harmless (with the least possible installations and load upon my computer), I checked out the link right now. And everything seemed to be going well, until I came to the bit 'In the Control Panel, open the "Java Plug-in Control Panel"'. Er... I guess I'm pretty dumb since all that I could find was simply a Java console in my control panel (I mean, it didn't say 'Java plug-in'). I clicked on that anyways, but really, I could find no cache tab there. :|
So I'm going to go try out Stu's suggestion now! I'll let you guys know how it all went after that! ^____^' Thank you!
Please let us know
Sorry for taking so long to reply. I wanted to check things out thoroughly instead of prematurely jumping about and bothering everyone.
(Also, sorry for posting in the wrong board! I didn't realize!)
So I went ahead and tried out Stu's method. While the Malwarebyte's anti-malware trudged up no results (to my disappointment), the Super Antispyware dragged out 68(!) spywares! So as you all directed, I immediately disposed of them. And then I ran my Norton (or to be more correct, Symantic) anti-virus a couple of times and all appears to be clear (though... it always says that anyways, except on Sundays [I suppose the grand test will be then?]).
But... the mysterious dvd drive still remains! Making me think all might not be so well? Any suggestions? Am I in the clear now?
(Ah... and ought I keep the anti-spyware and anti-malware installed? They're useful, right? And not taking up too much space/creating funny stuffs in my computer?)
Hello everyone. Em... basically I joined these forums in hope that someone might be able to help me with this problem of mine (that is... this dastardly trojan that refuses to leave my computer! Or atleast, refuses to leave it every sunday....)
So this problem of mine started a couple of weeks back. I've set my Norton Anti Virus to go through a full scan each sunday. And on one such sunday it declared that this particular trojan has taken up residence in my computer, could not be deleted, and so was quarantined. After obsessively reading through the help/info on the Symantic website, I followed the instructions, restarted my computer in safe mode, system restore off, scanned, found, and deleted the offending trojan. Trying to be extra careful (almost psychotically so!) I even scanned my computer 3 more times, but all seemed fine).
Until the next sunday. There it was again! So I went through the rituals again and again all seemed well. But this time, till this sunday, I kept scanning my computer again and again, for something didnot feel quite right. For some odd reason, a new disk drive (a new dvd drive to be exact) has popped up! One which is most definately not there! Still, my Norton declared nothing was wrong. Until today. The trojan is back. :( And quarantined. I'll probably go and restart my computer in safe mode right now, but I fear thats not really the solution is it?
Can someone please please help me out? How do I get rid of it? And how do I get rid of that mysterious dvd drive that isn't there at all!
Oh yes, I'm using Symantic Anti Virus - Full version 10.0.0.359? I think... it was called the corporate edition?
And I run Liveupdate very regularly!
And lastly, I read that this trojan attacks one's Java applications/attacks through that? I also heard that its only dangerous when one is using old versions of Sun Java? I'm currently running version 6, soooo... it technically shouldn't hurt me, right? But it certainly does look like its doing weird stuffs to my computer!
I'm affraid I over read something. Mysterious DVD drive?
It is usefull to keep both software on your machine. They won't hurt
Oh⌠sorry! Well, the mysterious dvd drive I was referring to was a dvd drive that has apperaed in my âMy Computerâ window. Only that⌠I donât have a third drive installed (I can only install up to 2)! And I have no clue where it came from! I had thought that perhaps this trojan had been the cause of creating this, but even after going through all that you had declared I should do, that mysterious drive still remains. :S WeirdâŚ
Hello Yakra,
You can try to solve this problem using Device Manager. Right click on "My Computer" icon, click "Properties", go to "Hardware" tab and run Device Manager. Expand "DVD/CD-Rom drives" category, right click on the suspicious device and select "Uninstall". Restart your computer and see if the drive appears again. If it does, repeat all steps, but this time do not try to uninstall, just use "Disable". Post the result here!
I just tried that right now. Trying to uninstall it seemed to do the trick, but when I restarted there it was again! So I just disabled it, as you said. Its gone for now. Even after restarting. But what on earth is it anyways? And how do I fully remove it from my computer? :( A random rumor I heard - the office where my brother works uses this same Symantic Anti-Virus on their computers. Apparently they've faced the same problem too? And apparently... according to him, after a while your original, actual drives cease to function and one is left with no other choice but to entirely format all? Is this true? Is this some new virus? Or some offshoot of this trojan?
I'll let you all know about what finally happened with the trojan tomorrow too! Its Sunday. Let's see if it tries rearing its ugly head once more!
I donât think that this is related with the trojan you had on your PC. Do you have Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120%, or similar programs installed ot your PC that simulate virtual drives ?
Oh yes, I do! Alcohol 120%! Is that the cause behind this...?
By the way, I just ran a virus scan since technically, it is Sunday right now. And... the trojans are back. Argh!
Try to uninstall âAlcohol 120%â and see if the drive appears again. If it doesnât, that means It was definitely a virtual drive created by the program, so no reason to worry! And, what about the viruses?
It seems that there are infected files left on your computer.
