Trouble downloading files

I recently renewed my Norton subscription from NIS '10 to '11. Since I renewed I am no longer able to download files. I get a box that says my security settings will not allow me to download file. I have Vista and IE 8. Everything is up to date. There has been no changes to my settings. The only thing that changed was going from '10 to '11. I have tried turning on and off certain functions but nothing seems to work. I have tried to download different files from different sites to make sure it wasn't site specific. I am unable to download anything. Any thoughts would be welcome.

If you disable the firewall, are you then able to download files?  Are you using an administrator account or a limited user account?  If you still can't download anything with the firewall disabled, you will need to look in the security settings in Internet Explorer.  There may have been a Windows update that changed something in Vista.

I tried using Google Chrome to download files and it worked. It must be something with IE. I guess it might be time to kiss IE goodbye. Thank you for your time and suggestions.

Hi dmow,

You should know that NIS does not integrate with Google Chrome insofar as the Norton toolbar is concerned.

Have you changed any settings in IE recently? You can try resetting IE to default settings. From Tools > Internet Options then click the Security tab and click on "Reset all zones to default level".

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Is the alert box a Norton notice or a Windows/ IE notice?  It doesn't sound like a Norton warning at all.  It seems more likely that the IE settings for your Internet Zone may be too restrictive for downloading, in which case you should add the download site, if you trust it, to the Trusted Sites Zone.

I tried the default levels like you mentioned but with no success. I think it might be time to give it a disapproving look and see if that works. Thank you for your time.

Hi dmow,

Can you please attach an image of the dialog box you are getting when you attempt to download a file?

You can do this by pressing Alt + Print Screen on your keyboard while the dialog is active. Then bring up Microsoft Paint and hit Ctrl + V. Save to your desktop and then attach to your post by clicking the  symbol at the top of your reply editor, brose to the saved image and click Insert.

Best wishes.

Happy Holidays.

I followed the link you posted. It was a big help. I had to go into custom levels on IE security settings. I changed file download settings and it works fine now. I have no idea why that happened. Is it possible that Windows or IE updates could have caused that? I was desperate enough that I asked my 24yr old son to take a look at it. All I heard was a 30 min spiel on Macs. Thanks everyone for all the help.
