I’m running Norton Security on Windows 7 on my main computer. In the Norton firewall settings, I set the network trust level to “public” for both the WiFi and Ethernet networks because I want everything to be totally secure. For example, if someone steals my phone I don’t want them to be able to access anything on my PC via WiFi. I don’t want to expose my computer contents to random devices on the wired network like my router. So I set network trust for both my WiFi and Ethernet networks to Public. But I have some Windows 7 laptop computers on the WiFi network that DO need to be able to access the drives and printer on my main computer, so on the main computer I set device trust to Full Access for each of the laptops, which I specify by name. FYI, the laptops are running Norton Internet Security and I don’t use Homegroup networking .
Two problems:
- I can’t access the printer attached to the main computer from any of the laptops. I can “create” the printer on the laptops (i.e. create a remote printer on each laptop which refers to the main computer's printer), but only if the Norton network trust level on the main computer is set to “Private” or “Full Access”. If I create the printer and then change the network trust level to “Public” while making sure the device trust level for each laptop is set to “Full Access” (with IPS Exclusion checked), printing doesn’t work (though the jobs are shown in the print queue on the laptop). If I change the network trust level back to "Full Access" the jobs I tried to print are then printed. Note that the printer is physically connected to the main computer via USB so all printing has to go through the main computer.
- Under “Network” in Windows Explorer on the laptop computers, the main computer is not listed, though I can still get to its drives by mapping them to drive letters.
It's as if the device trust level isn't overriding the network trust level. I don’t want to have to make my network less secure just so I can use a remote printer or see networked computers. Thanks for any help!
