As a newbie, forgive any errors but I have been trying to find out if I need Rapport as my bank (HSBC) seem very determined to get me to use it. I understand many banks are doing the same but I cannot find out what it does or if I need it with NIS2010 installed.
Trusteer Rapport is a browser add-on that adds a layer of security between you and a supported website. I found a nice little informational article on it here:
As far as whether you need it or not, that's up to you. I don't see any reason why it would conflict with the browser features of NIS, though obviously I haven't tested it myself. I can't really tell you if you should use it or not, because I haven't tried it and I don't have a bank that supports it. But if you read up on it and decide you want to give it a go let us know how it works out.
You could try checking out the website that makes the program and see what it says. See if it can be uninstalled easily in case it does conflict with NIS. Do a search and see if there are any people that may be complaining about the program.
Thanks to all for the input. The link to the talktalk item was interesting. It points out that screen print etc. is blocked and that means you cannot paste part of a screen to One Note which I use a lot to keep proof of banking transactions rather than print and keep paper copies.
I tried it and that is indeed the case - so no good to me. Now to see if it uninstalls well. Same article says it does so we shall see. If anything is found or Truteer or HSBC can offer a workaround I'll post again.
To be fair to Trusteer they have replied asking me to try some new settings re screen capture but I have already uninstalled it as I am still not convinced of the need or what it does.
I have advised them of this and the fact that there are files and folders left after uninstalling as they instruct. So I am ending this topic.
Since you got the answer to your question, could you please mark the thread which gave you the solution even if it was your own. This way everyone will know that the thread has been solved and will be able to find the answer quickly. Thank you.
You know, at this point I had no intention of installing "Trusteer Rapport". As mentioned in my last post, some of their claims just seem a bit wild for my liking, i.e. claims written by ad men without any technical knowledge.
Nevertheless, I was looking for something better than the wild claims made for this product, e.g. someone that has had real examples of the protective functions this product has performed. However, at the moment, there seems to be no such thing as “real experience” where this "Trusteer Rapport" is concerned, just “ad men” claims.
Please note, I did do some research on this utility before approaching this forum but like the info on "Kaspersky’s Forum" I found nothing substantive.
We have seen a few users with Trusteer Rapport on board. There were issues with slowing of the system. This link to several complaints by users may be useful.
Thanks for your input on this discussion, the URLs you've supplied has added some more knowledge to this debate and that is if your PC is well protected then there is no need to take an unnecessary risk and add Trusteer Rapport to your system.
I now believe that this product is primarily aimed at naïve/careless online bank users that have very little or no protection on their computers, rather than well-protected machines.
The main reason I started to ask about Trusteer Rapport was because a woman at work was asking about this utility that her online bank, Santander, was pushing. After an hour’s worth of research I recommended that she did not install this product (she is also a NIS2010 user). Thankfully, this weekend’s debate has reinforced my recommendation.
I just wanted you to know that with a current subscription for NIS 2010, you are entitled to a free upgrade to NIS 2011. The same thing woud apply to your friend if their subscription is current.
This is the link for NIS 2011. If your current NIS 2010 is working without any problems, then you can run NIS 2011 right over your NIS 2010. As a safety precaution, I would backup your Identity Safe. You can get your key from www.mynortonaccount.com
I was checking out Trusteer rapport a while ago and browsed to their site. I noticed afterwards that NIS 2011 had put it in the "Sites Reported to Symantec" History category. I didn't actually "report" anything. tually "report" anything myself.
