Trying to find file-recovery utility

Hallo.

I've just joined here - I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but it's worth a try, and I would be grateful for any suggestions.

I need a file-recovery utility that is compatible with Windows XP, something like the old Norton Utilities.  I don't know if any versions of this are still available or not, but I can't seem to find out about any.  I need something with which you can examine areas of the disk before deciding whether to put them into the recovered file - in other words I need a fully manual process, not just one of those automated ones that do everything all in one step, and if that doesn't recover the proper data, then it just doesn't work.  Most of the file-recovery programs I've found on web sites appear to be of that sort.

if any currently available Norton Utilities program will do this, I would be glad if someone could please give me the appropriate version number, and where I might get this, and how much it would cost roughly.  If Norton doesn't make any such thing any more, is there anything else that would do?  Would Knoppix do it?  That is a suggestion I have read occasionally.

If it makes any difference, the data have to be recovered from U.S.B. drives, not a hard disk.  I have not written to the drives since the mishap.  I used to use the old Norton Utilities, so I know how it works, and believe I can recover the data if only I can get suitable software.  Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

     Thank you.

Regards, Michael.
