I see two set of virus defintion in the folder C:\ProgramData\Norton\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}\NIS_20.2.1.22\Definitions\VirusDefs. The folders are 20130416.032 and 20130420.003. I recently performed a system restore. Everything looks normal. Norton have all green. Should I re-install?
I have turned off Tamper protection and deleted the folder (the 20130416.032). I also deleted the multiple folders (definition set) at C:\ProgramData\Norton\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}\NIS_20.2.1.22\Definitions\IPSDefs. Then I turned on tamper protection.
Am I "breaking" the program?
Hi Dave,
Virus defs and Intrusion Prevention defs are different animals and should really be left alone.
Dave
I have already deleted the Intrusion Prevent defs with the older dates (leaving only the latest version). I also deleted the old folder for virus definition. Eeep
Did I break the program?
For peace of mind, if you have no other Norton products installed you could run the Norton Remove & Reinstall Tool which will thoroughly uninstall your current copy and install a fresh new copy. It is a fairly painless procedure and doesn't take long.
Please Export your ID Safe data to somewhere you can find it, like an USB Flash drive.
Download and run the NRnR Tool
Remember to run Live Update, restarting where required, until no more updates are available.
Let us know how it goes.

I did a re-installation with the saving settings option. Does the NRnR save settings as well?
On a side note, should there be two IPS definition folders? I'm seeing that on my other PC.

I'm glad you got it sorted.
"Does the NRnR save settings as well?"
Good Question!
I carefully observed the programdata folder when I did the re-installation and the virus def disappear when the program uninstalled. Then when I re-installed, it re-appeared. I'm assuming now it should be "safe."
Using NRnR will retain your settings. The Norton Removal Tool (NRT) will remove more settings and files, but will still keep your main settings.
This is what I did:
1) Download the latest version of NIS from the link provided in the forum.
2) Go to uninstall Norton. Click on "I plan to reinstall Norton leave settings behind."
3) Reboot after uninstallation complete
4) Install from the file download
5) Run LiveUpdate until no updates remain
How akin is that to the NRnR?
Also, I see two folders in the IPS definition.

That is pretty close to the NRNR.
The issue you are having with multiple folders may be resolved by using the Norton Removal Tool. As I mentioned above, it does a more thorough removal, but will still maintain your settings.
Download the Norton Removal Tool from here www.norton.com/nrt
If you use Identity Safe, backup/export your data. Use the CSV format for compatibility.
Uninstall your Norton product with Windows control panel.
Reboot.
Run the Norton Removal Tool.
Reboot.
Log into your Norton Account from here www.account.norton.com
Click on the Download button beside your current product subscription. This will download and install a preactivated copy of your product.
Run LiveUpdate manually a few times, rebooting as necessary, until no updates are available.
Try to log into your Identity Safe. If you can, you are done. If not, Import your Identity Safe data.
Let us know if this helps.
The folder in question disappear when I did the re-installation.
And everything looks OK. I am unwilling to do a complete re-installation since I have to install the 2012 before doing the 2013. Quite complex. If stranger symtoms appear, I will be forced to go down the full re-installation route.
OK. Glad to hear you found your solution.
I only suggested the NRT as you said you still had two folders for the IPS defs.
We will be here if you need us again.
I see two folders in my other PC as well. Do you see two folders in the IPS folder in your PC? Also that folder disappeared in the uninstallation and was re-created by Norton.
Yes I see 2 folders for the IPS defs. It looks like they are one day apart. It could be a kind of backup.
Check in a couple of days to see if the dates on the folder names change.
There should always be two IPS definitions folders. The set of definitions prior to the current is kept as backup by the program.
