I searched and could not find this posted before. Apologies if I am wrong in that regard.
If you have two identical tray icons for NIS (and I have this from time to time on numerous machines running XP, WIn7 32, Win7 64,) and the change io aggressive for the "Enable boot time protection" did not work for you, then here is an apparent fix.
You need to copy and paste the following into a cmd prompt run with Administration rights and if your operating system permits then run the command prompt "Run as administrator".
What you propose here is not a solution but more a workaround, which even if it worked, a user would each time he reboots his pc to kill explorer.exe again & again.
The Notification area icons are recreated upon restart.
I do not opt for this workaround but if really you want not to see double icons, until Symantec releases a permanent fix, to go to the Notification Area and set the Norton icon to never show notifications and be visible in this area.
I would not recommend this fix to the average user of the Forum. Most users do not like to mess with the Registry. It is too dangerous of a thing since if someone deleted a wrong file, they would or could end up with a dead system.
The next thing is that I don't see a backup being made before you start changing or deleting parts of the Registry. In my opinion, it's just too dangerous to delete parts of the registry.
To try this fix, I would recommend that it be done with an expert system programmer or something, actually an expert Symantec person by your side. I would say that if it was as simple as changing or deleting 3 lines of the registry, then Norton would have come out with a fix for this Issue.
This lilsting of ideas is just my opinion. Thanks.
Maybe I should have attributed the apparent fix and then there would have been less criticism and more "lets actually try this".
The apparent fix I posted is that issued by Symantec as the fix for this problem. It was not stated to be a workaround. It was not accompanied with instructions verbally or otherwise to take a copy of the registry or registry key before hand. Naturally, I do and I suggest either ERUNDT or one of the other apps that in turn uses Erundt. Or simply export the key shown.
The "fix" was issued by L2 Case Manager.
In my experience the multiple icons do not occur on ever reboot and therefore applying this "fix" may very well resolve the problem or reduce the incidence. It would be possible to package this "fix" up as an executable or bat file.
I'm trying here to be the messenger and you know what they say about the messenger...!
In fairness to Symantec I would say thet generally they would perform this function remotely but for some that may give no less concern.
I mentionned the word "workaround" because it does not fix the problem permanently, and also it does not behave the same across all OS's.
Some W7 systems may be fixed for a while and some W8 not and vice-versa and after some time the issue is back.
Symantec is aware of the problem but, so far, no permanent fix for all platforms is released.
Also, you have clicked on the wrong message as a solution, if you really need to provide a solution, you should mark your first post with the registry tweaks.
Hi, Apostolos. The first post in this thread doesn't have the facility to list it as a solution. Only subsequent posts, so we'll have to stay with the one marked.
