U.K. VPN from Spain blocks BBC Sounds

I’m in Spain running the VPN (on iPad)  with location set to U.K. .... want to listen to BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra on BBC Sounds app .... doesn’t work .... looks like app recognises I am in Spain ... other VPNs work well. I’ve been using the Norton VPN for some months and it’s OK but this is the first time I’ve wanted to use it overseas and it seems that BBC Sounds is smarter than the VPN ! Any ideas ?

All: Streaming and other services are notorious for blocking VPN connections due to security, legal and licensing restrictions to a specific country and or geographic location. They do so to prevent unauthorized traffic off their network from outside supported countries and regions. Even without a VPN enabled they can detect your IP and know where you are located.

Cheers

Hi again ... thanks .... yes the IPV4 changes and looks like I’m in U.K. .... but for some reason BBC Sounds and Virgin Go think I’m not in U.K. !

It is not necessarily bad if IPV6 is not detected. Some devices do not support that protocol, and even some ISP's still do not fully support it. In the future it will be necessary, but for now it should not interfere with your use of your devcies.

Did your location change for IPV4 when you turned on the VPN?

I have IPV6 disabled in my router as my ISP does not fully support it, and I have not found anything I cannot do without it.

Hi ..thanks ... I’ve tried the whatismyipaddress but it shows “not detected” for IPV6 ... it’s beyond my technical ability to understand if that’s good or bad ... but what I do know is that it still doesn’t work with the Norton VPN but does with others !thanks for your input.

I know that on PC's there is an issue with the Norton VPN leaking your location through IPV6. This may be carrying over to the mobile versions. You can test by going to  https://whatismyipaddress.com/   with and without the VPN active.

I also just tried to use Virgin TV Go with the Norton U.K. VPN selected and it says the program is not available in this region .... I think the Norton U.K. VPN doesn’t work

Hi ..thanks for coming back. Yes, I have specifically selected the U.K. location ... and when I try to connect to BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Xtra (for premier league or cricket commentary) it fails. I would expect if the Norton VPN is to take off with U.K. resident users this will be something they want to do when they are travelling.

Have you checked your virtual location in the VPN feature? If set to Auto Select, try scrolling down the list to choose UK as your virtual location.
