I had to reinstall Norton Internet Security on my laptop, and now I am unable to get into the Norton Protection Center. Anytime I run the program I am sent to the Help and Support and told that "Norton Internet Security has detected that your PC is connected to the network, but was unable to connect to Symantec Support."
My internet works fine. Is there anything I can do to resolve this issue?

Well I’m not sure if its 2008 or 2009, it came with the laptop and doesn’t state a date. I followed your instructions, however, I didn’t see Norton listed.

If you can open Norton then click on Help ... / About and give the full version number nn.nn.nn.nn which will enable us to say what version it is.
Is it a trial version for say 90 days -- some computers come with that type. If you say exactly what make and model the laptop is I can probably check this out.
Just got the laptop a few days ago. What happened was that some one else in my house had installed another firewall on the computer and so I was trying to restore the registry files by reinstalling the software. When I first got the laptop it worked without issue. The same help and support screen came up, but that time I was able to choose my SSID and connect to the internet. This time it tells me that no points are in range. I am unable to actually get into the norton security center, I have to go through the network setup first, but I can't setup the network if it can't find my access point. There is nothing wrong with my access point, or my network adapter, as I am able to connect to the internet and surf the web.
Also, this is not a 90 day trial, I still have 364 days left on my subscription.
Yogesh is good on these things but it might help if you explained a bit more what you did when:
<< so I was trying to restore the registry files by reinstalling the software. >>
How did you remove the other "firewall"? Was it just a firewall or full security? What product was it (some are difficult to remove)?
The software you were reinstalling was the NIS 2009 which had been there previously? How did you get the file to reinstall it from?
I asked:
<< If you can open Norton then click on Help ... / About and give the full version number nn.nn.nn.nn which will enable us to say what version it is. >>
Can you please do that since NIS 2008 and NIS 2009 are totally differently built and operate differently.
it was the search and destroy firewall product. what i did was i uninstalled, then i removed the folder from program files, application data, and the registry.
i have an hp laptop and it came with a recovery suite which features the ability to reinstall programs that came on the laptop when you bought it.
Like huwyngr said, it may be easier to provide an apt solution if we get the exact details of your Norton product. Symantec does not recommend having multiple firewalls installed on the same computer at one time like NIS and Spybot Search & Destroy Firewall. You may encounter unknown problems between the firewalls, and if a third-party firewall is installed on the computer, it is recommend that you uninstall that firewall. This is because Norton Internet Security provides essential protection from viruses, hackers, and privacy threats through Smart Firewall/Personal Firewall, there is no need for a second firewall.
Can you go through the Symantec Support Article in this LINK and verify which version of Norton program you are having currently? Please post your finding.
If you have currently installed Norton Internet Security 2007/2008, please uninstall it using the Norton Removal tool and install Norton Internet Security 2009 free upgrade.
1. Go to your Norton Account using this LINK and get the Product Key. You may require this same Product Key for activating the Norton 2009 program. If you are unable to find the Product Key, contact Symantec Customer Services to get it and then proceed with uninstall/upgrade.
2. Download Norton Removal tool from this LINK and run it 2-3 times to make sure that the previous version has been uninstalled completely.
3. Download the free upgrade(NIS 2009) using this LINK, install it and activate it using the Product Key from your Norton Account.
Glad to hear you cleared it -- see why it's important to answer the questions we ask?
Please Note that, where Yogesh refers to a free upgrade to NIS2009 if you do not have that, this does not apply to OEM installed copies of earlier versions. But on a new laptop it is highly likely to be NIS2009 and not 2008 so that need not worry you.
However you are not likely to have the latest version of NIS2009 when you reinstall from the recovery partition (HP/Compaq I would guess!) so, again, that is why we ask what you have.
