Unable to Open norton360

i am unable to open norton 360. when i start windows it shows 360 as running but when i double click on the icon, nothing happens. when i right click on the icon the menu pops up but again nothing

i have tried to uninstall & reinstall it a couple of times & have also tried the norton power eraser with no luck.

ive got no other anti virus software installed although i did install/uninstall avg in between norton installs to check for viruses,

ccleaner & malware bytes have not found anything either.

i am running windows 7 home premium with norton 360 premier edition.

i have also noticed that internet explorer crashes for some web pages (chrome works fine though)

any help would be great

i only installed avg after i had problems with 360. i had already installed & installed 360 a couple of times before i tried avg. i used both norton & avg uninstaller both times. before i had this problem i have only norton 360

i have never used id safe

windows 7 is on auto update & i have check to make sure it has the latest update on

i can't run nortons live update because i cannot open 360.

i remember having this problem an age ago & reinstalling seem to solve the problem. This time however after 5 uninstalls reinstalls i am beginning to run out of ideas

Maybe a more thorough removal is needed.

Please try the steps in the following post by our Guru Phil_D  -  http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/NIS-causing-XP-to-report-System-Volume-Information-is-corrupt-or/m-p/1009599/highlight/true#M243333

i really dont know what to try next.

i have uninstalled everything i can find with norton or Symantec in the name manually.

everytime i uninstall or delete something i reboot

i have tried a fresh download of 360 from the website

i have removed all the external hardware (apart from printer) from my machine in case that is causing a conflict some how

i am officially out of ideas :(

Hi guinessdave,

You stated you used the Norton and AVG uninstaller - did you in fact do what Krusty13 suggeseted:

"My suggestion would be to download and run the AVG removal tool - make sure you download the correct version for the product and also either 32-Bit or 64-Bit depending on you system."

I ask, as the Norton Removal Tool and the AVG Removal Tool are separate programs which remove their products - very much different from what some folks call a specific program uninstaller (such as using Programs & Features in the control Panel).

Did you in fact also run the Norton Removal Tool  in order to totally remove the former N 360 installs?

Please let us know the answers to my  questions.

Try clearing all Windows temp files. Then navigate to the C:/Windows/Prefetch folder. Delete all files in that folder. These files will be recreated as you run your programs.

Reboot your computer and test.

yes i have used both the norton uninstall tool & the avg uninstall tool (mulitple times) with no luck.

what i did  manage to do last night was to just about uninstall everything from my machine, including everything that has the words norton or symantic in.

i have then reloaded 360 & it has finally worked....yay.

i then spent most of the day reinstalling everything from office to winzip etc

now i have just notice that 360 will not open again.

i think the last time it was working was just before i installed itunes. i will now attempt to uninstall itunes, bonjour & all the other stuff apple installs & hopefully norton will magically come back

i will let you know..!

so to recap...

i have used the correct norton uninstaller

i have manually deleted everything that has norton or symantec from my c drive

i have no other antivirus software (yes i did install avg after the problem occured but have since used the correct uninstaller)

norton will not open when i double click on but says it working

i have spent most of my weekend installing & uninstalling various software & just when i get it working again the same problem occurs.

is there any posibilty that its a virus which is causing this as i am finding it hard to belive its windows or any other sfotware i have installed?

Did you try clearing the Prefetch folder as I suggested above?

With iTunes installation, I always seem to have entries in Event Viewer related to the Bonjour Service having problems. When I uninstall Bonjour, those errors stop.

Are you double clicking the desktop shortcut?  Perhaps that is corrupted.  Can you try clicking the tray icon  -  Norton 360 Tray Icon.PNG.  Can you go the Start menu > All Programs and try launching N360 from there.
