Unable to Update Garmin Mapsource Since Installing NIS 2010

I have a Garmin GPS which came with mapping software which allows me to create routes on the computer and download to the GPS.  Every so often, Garmin posts an update on its Web site (a 7z SFX self-extracting archive) that can be downloaded and run.  I  had no trouble updating my Garmin software while using NIS 2005.

Approximately 8 months ago, I upgraded to NIS 2010.  Since that time, Garmin has posted two updates, neither of which will run/install.  When I download the self-extracting archive file, NIS informs me that the file is "safe", but when I try to launch it, I get a message stating "The application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect.  Reinstalling the application may fix the problem."

Is NIS 2010 blocking this type of file from running?  What needs to be turned off / turned on / or reset so that I can update my mapping software?  Is there a known incompatibility with this type of archive file?

I am running Windows XP Professional SP3 (up-to-date with all patches), IE8, NIS 2010 17.7.0.12

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi nobigadiehl2me

Welcome to the Norton Community Forums

I use Mapsource for my GPS60CSX and have NIS 2010 and not had issues with those updates. The message seems to be asking you to reinstall MapSource, have you tried that?

Also, check the information from this LINK.

Yes, I have - twice, in fact.  The first time, I uninstalled/reinstalled only MapSource.  The second time, I went so far as to uninstall/reinstall the City Navigator maps (both CNNA6 and CNNA2008).  In both cases, I tried running the update afterwards and got the same error message.

Oddly enough, I have sent an email to Garmin outlining the same issue reported here and in their response they, too, suggested that I do the uninstall/reinstall dance (again!).  Plus, they suggest editing the Registry to remove some "Garmin" keys.  I just wish I knew how MapSource could get whacked when the only new software I've installed is NIS.  Just doesn't make sense.

How very interesting!!  A Garmin support case dealing with the very issue I contacted them about.  Yet, they made no mention of it in their reply to me (as mentioned in my previous post).

Thank you, Yogesh!  I will certainly investigate further.

Problem solved!!  I downloaded the runtime libraries as referenced in the LINK provided by Yogesh and....voila....the Garmin update started right up and finished without a hitch in under 2 minutes.

KUDOS to Yogesh!!!!
