I am trying to understand how 360 backup works.
1.When I look at the backup files, I do not understand the structure. How would I find a file to restore? Or do I have to restore everything?
2.When I modify a file does Norton 360 modify the existing backup Or does it create a new backup?
3. If 360 creates multiple backups, what does 360 do when my backup drive is full? Does it delete the oldest backup?
4. If there is only one backup that constantly updated, If I change a file name does the backup keep the old file in the backup Or does it delete files that no longer exist on my main drives?
itunes modifies file names, if I need to restore my music files will 360 only restore what was current Or will it restore all the old file names also? I am concerned that my itunes library, when restored, would contain thousands of duplicates because file names were changed.
Lastly, if I decide that I do not like how 360 Backup works, how do I get 360 to get rid of the red "X" if I prefer to perform backups another way?
Hi WillieP,
Let me answer your questions!
When I look at the backup files, I do not understand the structure. How would I find a file to restore? Or do I have to restore everything?
You have the option to select individual files or file categories to restore in the Norton 360 Restore Files window. Here are the steps:
To select an individual file category to restore
In the Norton 360 main window, move the pointer over Backup, and click Restore Files.
In the Restore Files window, under Files Types, uncheck Select All.
All of the file categories that are listed under the Files Types heading are unchecked.
To the left of each file category that you want to restore, check the check box.
To select individual files within a file category
In the Norton 360 main window, move the pointer over Backup, and click Restore Files.
In the Restore Files window, under File Types, click Edit next to a file category.
In the left pane, go to the folder from which you want to select files, and do one of the following:
In the right pane, check the files that you want to restore.
If you want to restore all the files in that folder, check the check box in the header of the Restore Files table.
When I modify a file does Norton 360 modify the existing backup Or does it create a new backup?
Norton 360 will update the existing file.
If 360 creates multiple backups, what does 360 do when my backup drive is full? Does it delete the oldest backup?.
Norton 360 will not create multiple backups
If there is only one backup that constantly updated, If I change a file name does the backup keep the old file in the backup Or does it delete files that no longer exist on my main drives?
If the file is renamed Norton 360 will keep the old file. Also the new file will be added to the backup.
itunes modifies file names, if I need to restore my music files will 360 only restore what was current Or will it restore all the old file names also? I am concerned that my itunes library, when restored, would contain thousands of duplicates because file names were changed.
Ideally the ID3 tags are changed and not the actual filename. Though you can go ahead and view the files before you restore.
If I decide that I do not like how 360 Backup works, how do I get 360 to get rid of the red “X” if I prefer to perform backups another way?
You can disable the backup
In the Norton 360 main window, move the pointer over Backup, and click View Details
In the Backup Details window, click Turn of Backup
