Hi all,
I have uninstalled Norton on one PC, and am installing it on another. I went through Programs & Features route of uninstalling it. I then thought to run the uninstall tool, just to make sure everything was cleaned up, but when I try to run it, a quick little pop up shows, followed by another pop up saying it's already running in the background, yet never runs?
I disable the running process from Task Manager, SynNRT.exe and try it again, to no avail, with the same pop up message. I used the Internet Security tool, and the all inclusive years up to 2011 uninstall tool downloaded from the web site, with the same result. Dose that mean there is nothing for it to find to clean, so it doesn't even load a progress window?
Uninstalled NIS 2011
PC=s Windows 7 64-bit
Thank you for your help

Hi SendOfJive
Yes, exactly. I ran the first one listed, for the 06-11 products, and when that didn't work, I tried the one below, I have the Security Suite ..
Before I posted this thread I had tried to run the removal tool in SafeMode w/ Networking, in case it needed to call home before it ran.
Just in case, I just tried it in Safe Mode w/o Networking, and it worked
Do you think it was some conflict with something else on my "running" PC?
Safe Mode clean up should be just as good at cleaning up as in normal running PC mode, shouldn't it?
Hello Siramic
Did you have McAfee installed before you had Comcast Norton Security Suite installed? If you did, I would suggest running the McAfee removal tool also.
Are you running any other security programs like Spybot with Tea Timer enabled?
Hi floplot
Thanks for your questions. I had no other real time security on the PC, only the free version of Malwarebytes, and free SuperAntiSpyware for on demand scans.
I previously had NAV 2011 installed from a Best Buy disc, and had installed NIS 2011 "on top of" NAV. I had an issue with losing an available install of my NAV (a 1 user, 3PC license) and Norton phone support tech who did a remote desktop session, said that I was wrong, that NAV was only a one PC install and that she would give me the NIS for "free" to get me a 3 install license, as she could tell I was a little defensive, as the disc I held in my hand that showed, 1 user, 3 PC's for 1 year.
It took 3 different sessions before I received a tech. who was able to help me feel comfortable about a resolution to my issue. I guess the previous years of NAV were only a 1 PC license, and the NAV 2011 is available in a 3 PC install license. He reconfigured me back to the NAV resetting my avaliable installs to the correct 2 left, and deleted the NIS. Maybe the install of the NIS over the NAV put a glitch in the Uninstall Tool?
lol, I just know you all wanted to hear the whole story, tooo much information
sira,
Never too many diamonds ... or information .... You have probably given the key to the problem and I'm sure floplot can help you resolve it.
lol, thanks for that encouragement Hugh, I appreciate it
Hello siramic
Do I understand you correctly saying that you currently have NAV 2011 installed and you want to uninstall NAV 2011? Is your NAV 2011 running properly now? What are you using for a firewall? The install of NIS 2011 over NAV 2011 is not a good idea because now you probably have parts of both products running. I am wondering if he uninstalled both the NIS 2011 and the NAV 2011 and then give you a clean install of NAV. 2011.
When you try using the removal tool, have you tried to remove NIS 2011 also? First of all, what do you see in the program listings for Norton. Do you see both NAV and NIS showing up and also what do you see in the add/remove part of the contol panel if there is such a thing in win 7? Thanks
You can also try running the Norton Removal Tool in Safe Mode.

Yes
that's what I ended up in doing, or had to do to get it to run. Everything is installed on the PC's I was working with, and is going well. Thanks for your help. I just wanted to confirm that doing it that way, is just as effective as running it in "normal" mode. With your reply, it sounds like that is a legitimate work around. Lets consider this thread answered
Thank you all who responded for your help
Thanks for reporting back so quickly and for marking the Solution that helps others later.
